056 CHROMATOGRAPHY
Chromatography is a method of separation of
substances based on their different mobility in a
given stationary support.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
Black, red and blue ink Chalk piece (used for
writing on Blackboard) A lid about 6 cm diameter
from a bottle or jar A glass tumbler A strip of
blotting paper or filter paper A stick from broom
or a small twig

Mix a few drops of black, red and blue ink. Place
a few drops of this ink on a chalk about 5mm from
the thick end. Dry the chalk in air and place in
the lid containing water.

The ink spot should not be in direct contact with
the water. After some time water rises up the
chalk and the different colours are separated as
bands

Take a strip of blotting paper and place a small
drop of the mixed ink on it about 1cm from the
end. Dip the strip in water and fold and rest the
other end on a stick on the glass. Water level
should be below the ink dot
As the water rises on the paper, the colours of
the ink mixture are dispersed as distinct bands
