Newham Young People Online
2
Aims
  • To be a learning environment that is stimulating
    and challenging to young people
  • To inspire in young people a sense of belonging
    to a creative community
  • To involve young people as creators, owners and
    managers of the online community
  • To use a variety of strategies to reach the
widest possible range of young people.

3
Is A Creative Community
  • Young people have created websites and animations
as part of courses run during the summer and at
other times. There are over forty young peoples
websites hosted on the NYPO site. The creators of
the sites range in age from 11 to 19.

4
AndAn Ongoing Conversation
  • NYPO allows young people to take part in online
    conversation.
  • Conversations help create a rich context for
    learning.
  • The main tool for online conversations is the PHP
Bulletin Board used for discussion forums.

5
Learning Portfolios
  • A major strength of the NYPO project is that
    through websites, projects, articles and
contributions to discussion, young people leave
    digital evidence of their creativity.
  • A structure is being created where, through work
they are already doing and through challenges set
by tutors, young people can put together online
portfolios that lead to internal or external
    awards.
  • Young people can sign up for web space where they
can upload websites and other files.

6
The NYPO / ICT Strategy is to
  • Develop a variety engaging online and offline
learning material aimed at young people with
    differing interests and abilities
  • Develop systems for supporting young people as
members of an online learning community
  • Develop and extend ICT access and ICT facilities
    at centres
  • Develop courses and less formal means of engaging
    young people
  • Develop the ability of youth work staff to engage
young people in the creative use of ICT and
    online community
  • Develop the ability of young people to take
further ownership of the development and
    promotion of the NYPO community
  • Develop systems for professionals sharing
    information, materials, practice and resources
with regard to ICT work with young people.
  • Develop the integration of ICT and online
community work with more generic and wider youth
    work practice.
