Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated.
Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Several
other declarations of war followed by the next
week. Germany invaded Belgium and started the
fight. Austria-Hungary invaded Russia, opening
the fighting on the Eastern Front. The allies
stopped the Germans in France in the first battle
of the Marne.

President Woodrow Wilson announced his Fourteen
Points as the basis for peace. Russia signed the
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk Germany launched the
first of its final three offensives on the
Western Front. The Allies began their final
offensive on the Western Front. Germany singed
an armistice ending World War 1.
