Concrete is Ageless Concrete is one of the oldest
and widely used of construction materials and
possesses many inherent qualities which can be
used to benefitthe client, designerand
contractor.

Benefits of Designing with Precast
9
Precast concrete is more and more becoming the
building material of choice. Its use in various
types of buildings is growing throughout the
nation. Architects are specifying precast
concrete for the design flexibility it gives them
both in space planning and the variety of
architectural features available. Engineers are
attracted to longer spans, shallower depths and
inherent fire resistance. General Contractors
like precast for its speed of construction and
limited impact to the job site. Owners are
attracted to the more durable, low maintenance
buildings that precast concrete provides.
10
Variety of Surface Finishes Precast concrete
provides an extraordinary range of surface
finishes, providing the opportunity for
architectural expression to go hand in hand with
structural integrity.

Availability Precast concrete products are
available in most regions in the United
States. Precast components are manufactured in
advance, stored, and are readily available when
needed at the job site.

Flexibility of Shape and Form Concrete can be
molded into any shape. This capability can be
used to provide custom made design solutions to
specific problems and also aesthetically pleasing
finishes.

16
Quality Control Because precast concrete products
typically are produced in a controlled
environment, they exhibit high quality and
uniformity.

18
Strength Precast exterior cladding can easily be
designed to handle structural building loads,
thereby reducing the need for other structural
components.

Durability Studies have shown that concrete
products can provide a service life in excess of
100 years. This is extremely important when
calculating life-cycle costs for a project.

22
Fire Resistance Precast concrete is
noncombustible. Concrete is naturally and
inherently fire resistant and needs no additional
application of fire protection.

24
UV Sensitivity Precast concrete does not degrade
from exposure to sunlight. This is extremely
beneficial for above-ground applications.

26
Chemical Resistance Precast concrete is resistant
to most substances. Precast concrete products can
be designed to withstand anticipated corrosive
agents.

28
Weather Resistance Precast concrete is
well-suited for exposure to all types of weather
conditions. Precast concrete products produced in
a quality-controlled environment offer superior
watertightness.

30
Reduced Weather Dependency Precast concrete
increases efficiency because weather will not
delay production. In addition, weather conditions
at the jobsite do not significantly affect the
schedule.
31
Ease of Installation The modular nature of
precast concrete, allows structures of almost any
size to be accommodated. Precast products are
designed and manufactured for simple connections
and fast installation.
32
Sound Transmission Class (STC) The higher the STC
number the better sound barrier.
Impact Insulation Class (IIC) The higher the IIC
number the better the impact insulation.

Precast Concrete isEnvironmentally
Friendly Concrete consists of naturally occurring
materials, produces no emissions and needs no
toxic preservatives. This is becoming an
increasingly important issue.

Precast and Sustainability
36
The Great Paradigm Shift to Sustainability
The Great Paradigm Shift to Sustainability
37
What is Sustainability Anyway?
A simple concept, Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle Sustainability means living and working
in a manner that does the least harm to the earth.
A good description is
infinitely beneficial.
38
Sustainability A World Event?
The most acceptable definition emerged in 1987 in
the U.N. World Commission on Environment and
Development Brundtland Report (Our Common
Future) sustainable development is that
development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.
39
Precast Concrete and Sustainability
Precast concrete contributes to green building
practices in significant ways. Because precast
concrete is factory-made, there is little waste
created in the plant and it reduces construction
waste and debris on site, reducing construction
IAQ concerns. The thermal mass of concrete allows
shifting of heating and cooling loads in a
structure to help reduce mechanical system
requirements.
40
Is Precast Concrete Energy-Efficient?
The thermal mass of precast concrete absorbs and
releases heat slowly, shifting air conditioning
and heating loads to allow smaller, more
efficient HVAC systems. Insulation is often used
in architectural panels and sandwich wall panels
to increase thermal efficiency. The resulting
savings of heating and cooling costs can be
significant.
41
Precast concrete is increasingly being recognized
for its strong environmental benefits in support
of creative and effective sustainable development.
When considering the lifetime environmental
impact of a building material extraction,
production, construction, operation, demolition
and recycling, concrete is an excellent choice to
meet these goals.
Abundant Natural Resources The primary
ingredients of concrete - cement, crushed stone
or gravel, sand and water are generally plentiful
in most locations.
42
Concrete Buildings Reduce Energy Use   Cold
Climates Moderate Climates Warm
Climates    Insulated precast concrete wall
systems provide high R-value and thermal mass
with low air infiltration to provide superior
thermal efficiency and optimal energy performance
over the long life of the building. Precast
interior and exterior finishes can be an integral
ingredient, reducing costs and energy consumption
during construction and for ongoing maintenance.
Studies indicate that 80 or more of the
greenhouse gases generated from structures are
released through energy produced for their
ongoing heating and cooling.
