Title: Sins of the Tongue
1(No Transcript)
2Sins of the Tongue
- (Ps 391)
- I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin
not with my tongue I will keep my mouth with a
bridle, while the wicked is before me.
3Much sin can Come from the Tongue
- (James 35-8) Even so the tongue is a little
member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how
great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the
tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity so is the
tongue among our members, that it defileth the
whole body, and setteth on fire the course of
nature and it is set on fire of hell. For every
kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents,
and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been
tamed of mankind But the tongue can no man tame
it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
4We as children of God must Control our Tongue
- (James 39-12) Therewith bless we God, even the
Father and therewith curse we men, which are
made after the similitude of God. Out of the
same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My
brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth
a fountain send forth at the same place sweet
water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren,
bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can
no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
5James 126
- If any man among you seem to be religious, and
bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own
heart, this man's religion is vain.
6Many ways in which Man can Sin with the Tongue

We must be reminded of these things, so that we
can continue to work on them.
7Taking Gods Name in Vain
- (Ex 207) Thou shalt not take the name of the
Lord thy God in vain for the Lord will not hold
him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. - We must show deep reverence and godly fear when
we reference God. - His name is not be used disrespectfully such as
- False Swearing and Cursing
- Careless Bywords
8Taking Gods Name in Vain
- Instead of taking Gods name in Vain, we need to
Give reverence to God - (Heb 1228-29) Wherefore we receiving a kingdom
which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby
we may serve God acceptably with reverence and
godly fear For our God is a consuming fire.
9Filthy Speaking
- (Col 38) But now ye also put off all these
anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy
communication out of your mouth. - Filthy Speaking reveals a filthy heart
- (Matt 1234) O generation of vipers, how can ye,
being evil, speak good things? for out of the
abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
10Filthy Speaking
- Christians conversation must be pure
- (Col 46) Let your speech be alway with grace,
seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought
to answer every man. - Salt from its use in preserving food from
corruption, and rendering it both savory and
wholesome, has always been made the emblem of
wisdom. - (Adam Clarke's Commentary)
11Filthy Speaking
- Instead of filthy speaking we need to edify.
- (Eph 429) Let no corrupt communication proceed
out of your mouth, but that which is good to the
use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto
the hearers.
12Gossiping
- (Lev 1916) Thou shalt not go up and down as a
talebearer among thy people neither shalt thou
stand against the blood of thy neighbour I am
the Lord. - (Prov 1113) A talebearer revealeth secrets but
he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the
matter. - Which are you? A talebearer or a faithful spirit?
- Gossip can destroy friendships
- (Prov 1628) A whisperer separateth chief
friends.
13Gossiping
- Takes two to gossip
- (Prov 2019) He that goeth about as a talebearer
revealeth secrets therefore meddle not with him
that flattereth with his lips. - (Prov 174) A wicked doer giveth heed to false
lips and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
14Hasty Words
- (James 119-20) Wherefore, my beloved brethren,
let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak,
slow to wrath For the wrath of man worketh not
the righteousness of God. - Think Twice Before You Speak!
- (Prov 2123) Whoso keepeth his mouth and his
tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
15Angry Words
Angry words! O let them never From the tongue
unbridled slip May the hearts best impulse ever
Check them ere they soil the lips.
- (Prov 151) A soft answer turneth away wrath
but grievous words stir up anger. - (Prov 2911) A fool uttereth all his mind but a
wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. - Dont always say whats on your mind!
- (Titus 32) To speak evil of no man, to be no
brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto
all men. - Christians are not to be contentious but gentle
16Deceitful Speaking and Lying
- (Jer 98) Their tongue is as an arrow shot out
it speaketh deceit one speaketh peaceably to his
neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth
his wait. - (Prov 616-19) These six things doth the Lord
hate yea, seven are an abomination unto him A
proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed
innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked
imaginations, feet that be swift in running to
mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and
he that soweth discord among brethren. - (Prov 1222) Lying lips are abomination to the
Lord but they that deal truly are his delight.
17Deceitful Speaking and Lying
- If one is a liar he can not be a Child of God
- (John 844) Ye are of your father the devil, and
the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a
murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the
truth, because there is no truth in him. When he
speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own for he is
a liar, and the father of it.
18Deceitful Speaking and Lying
- One that is a liar will not receive eternal life!
- (Rev 218) But the fearful, and unbelieving, and
the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers,
and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars,
shall have their part in the lake which burneth
with fire and brimstone which is the second
death.
19Deceitful Speaking and Lying
- Paul commands us
- (Eph 425) Wherefore putting away lying, speak
every man truth with his neighbour for we are
members one of another. - We must speak the truth in all things
- (Prov 2628) A lying tongue hateth those that
are afflicted by it and a flattering mouth
worketh ruin.
20Flattery
- (Prov 2628) and a flattering mouth worketh
ruin. - (Ps 59) For there is no faithfulness in their
mouth their inward part is very wickedness
their throat is an open sepulchre they flatter
with their tongue. - Must speak like Paul
- (1 Thess 25) For neither at any time used we
flattering words
21Boasting
- (James 35) Even so the tongue is a little
member, and boasteth great things. - (James 416) But now ye rejoice in your
boastings all such rejoicing is evil. - There is nothing for us to boast about
- (1 Cor 47) For who maketh thee to differ from
another? and what hast thou that thou didst not
receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost
thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?
22Complaining
- (1 Cor 1010-11) Neither murmur ye, as some of
them also murmured, and were destroyed of the
destroyer. Now all these things happened unto
them for ensamples and they are written for our
admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are
come. - The Israelites consistently complained while in
the wilderness - (Phil 214) Do all things without murmurings and
disputings
23Complaining
- We need to learn patience
- (James 14) But let patience have her perfect
work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting
nothing. - Paul had the correct attitude
- (Phil 411) Not that I speak in respect of want
for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am,
therewith to be content.
24Complaining
- One that complains brings down all around them
- Pessimistic view is not a Christian View
- (Ps 14520) The Lord preserveth all them that
love him but all the wicked will he destroy. - (Rom 828) And we know that all things work
together for good to them that love God, to them
who are the called according to his purpose.
25Great Swelling Words
- (2 Peter 218) For when they speak great
swelling words of vanity, they allure through the
lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness,
those that were clean escaped from them who live
in error. - High-Sounding Words without substance For the
sake of gaining disciples after them selves.
26Great Swelling Words
- We need to speak as Paul spoke
- (1 Cor 21-5) And I, brethren, when I came to
you, came not with excellency of speech or of
wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
For I determined not to know any thing among you,
save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was
with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much
trembling. And my speech and my preaching was
not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in
demonstration of the Spirit and of power That
your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men,
but in the power of God.
27False Teaching
- (Gal 18) But though we, or an angel from
heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than
that which we have preached unto you, let him be
accursed. - (2 Peter 21) But there were false prophets also
among the people, even as there shall be false
teachers among you, who privily shall bring in
damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that
bought them, and bring upon themselves swift
destruction.
28False Teaching
- Instead of using our tongue to promote
perversions, we need to preach and teach the
truth. - (2 Tim 42-4) Preach the word be instant in
season, out of season reprove, rebuke, exhort
with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the
time will come when they will not endure sound
doctrine but after their own lusts shall they
heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears
And they shall turn away their ears from the
truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

30Let us use our tongue for the glory of God
- (1 Cor 1031) Whatsoever ye do, do all to the
glory of God. - (Col 317) And whatsoever ye do in word or deed,
do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God and the Father by him.
31(Ps 391) I said, I will take heed to my ways,
that I sin not with my tongue I will keep my
mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before
me.
