Title: Study Island - A Web-based Assessment Tool

1
  • A Web -Based Assessment Tool

For the classroom and home
By Darryl T. Powell
2
What is it?
  • Study Island is a leading provider of web-based
    state assessment preparation programs and
    standards based learning programs.

3
Features
  • Students simply log on to Study Island from
anywhere. All they need is an Internet
    connection.
  • Students master topics built from the New Jersey
Standard Course of Study and tested on the NJASK.
  • Each topic is built from one of the objectives
within the Standard Course of Study.
  • Each topic contains a straightforward lesson and
    assessment questions with detailed explanations
    that provide automated instruction.
  • Students can choose between traditional tests or
interactive games as their learning method.

4
How does it work?
  • The program is divided into sections based on
    subject (math, reading, science, etc.)
  • Each section is made up of 10 to 25 topics.
  • Each topic contains about 20 to 25 questions with
    explanations.

5
Its Aligned
  • All topics are accompanied by a lesson which
includes some brief information about the
material covered by the questions in the topics.

6
Its Rigorous
  • For each subject (math, reading, and science),
the students must take a pre-test, complete all
content groups covering all the New Jersey
Standard Course of Study, and pass a post-test in
    order to complete the program.

7
Its Friendly
  • Teachers have access to a private page where they
can view usage statistics and results for each
student, a group of students, and the school as a
whole. In addition, teachers can compare their
students' performance against other students in
    New Jersey.

8
Why Does it Work
  • Web-based - Because Study Island is completely
Web based, students can use it at school or home
and can study and learn at their own pace. There
is no software to download or install all you
    need is an Internet connection.

9
Dynamic Content
  • Not only are there several thousand questions in
the Study Island program, but each question is
also constantly changing. The answers to the
    multiple choice questions are continuously
changing position, and the numbers in the math
questions are randomly chosen. This causes the
students to learn the concepts, not just memorize
    the answers.

10
Skills-Specific
  • Study Island's lessons and practice tests are
based solely on the New Jersey Standard Course of
Study and are specifically designed to prepare
students for the NJASK Test. Study Island covers
each and every Objective that will be tested on
    the NJASK Test.

11
Better Than Workbooks
  • Study Island offers all the benefits of workbook
based programs in addition to the tremendous
benefits that can only be provided by a Web based
program. Unlike workbooks, Study Island enables
students to interact with thousands of questions,
then automatically and instantly grades and
records all student work. In addition, users are
    able to print custom workbooks.

12
Multiple Study Modes
  • In addition to allowing students to learn at
their own pace, Study Island lets students choose
their style of learning. Students can choose
between a standard test format and several
interactive games for their study sessions.

13
Real-time Reporting
  • Study Island records statistics for each user
session in a real time report card. Teachers have
access to a private page where they can view
usage statistics and results for each student and
the school as a whole. Real-time reports
(including graphs) help teachers measure progress
and identify deficiencies as they relate to the
    specific Objective. Teachers and administrators
can use these statistics to see how their
students compare to other students in New Jersey.
