Types of Adjectives
  • ARTICLES
  • A, an, and the are the most frequently used
    (though often forgotten Articles.
  • A and an are indefinite articles because they
do not specify a particular person place or
    thing.
  • The is a definite article because it always
    points out a particular item.
  • PRONOUNS
  • A pronoun functions as an adjective if it
modifies a noun or a pronoun.
  • E.g. Has anyone seen our dog?
  • Possessive pronouns, indefinite pronouns,
    demonstrative pronouns and interrogative pronouns
    may all serve as adverbs.

5
Types of Adjectives
  • PROPER
  • A proper adjective is a name that functions as
the modifier of a noun or a pronoun.
  • A proper adjective is always capitalized.
  • To create a proper adjective, you add the suffix,
-n, -an, -ian, or ish, or ese to the name.
  • NOUNS
  • Possessive nouns function as adjectives because
    they modify nouns or pronouns.
  • Most singular possessives are formed by adding
    s
  • Form plural possessive by adding s or es.
  • Sometimes, nouns function as adjectives without
    changing form.
  • E.g. Lets go to the football match?

6
Placement of Adjectives
  • Often, adjectives appear directly before the
nouns or pronouns they modify, sometimes
    separated by a comma.
  • An adjective may come after a linking verb and
    modify the subject.
  • Sometimes an adjective follows the word that it
modifies and is separated by a comma.

7
Adverbs
  • An adverb is a word that modifies a verb,
    adjective, or another adverb.

Adverbs answer one of five questions How? When?
Where? How often? To what extent?
8
Adverb Work Placement
  • When an adverb modifies the verb, it modifies the
entire verb phrase, which includes the main verb
    and any auxiliary verbs.
  • An adverb that modifies a verb does not have to
    appear next to that verb.

9
Adverb Work Placement
  • Adverbs modifying adjectives are usually placed
directly before the adjective being modified.
  • E.g. The play was absolutely delightful.
  • The exam was very difficult.

10
Adverb Work Placement
  • Adverbs modifying other adverbs usually precede
    the adverbs they modify.
  • The class covered the material rather quickly.
  • Lisa behaved very differently when her parents
    were present.

11
Interjections
  • An interjection is an exclamatory word or phrase
that can stand by itself, but may also appear in
    a sentence.

Many interjections express strong emotions and
are followed by exclamation points (!).
