Are you a multimodal learner?
  • There are several styles of learning according to
    Howard Gardnervisually, kinesthetically (use of
    senses), etc.

3
Retention of Vocabulary
  • Set aside time daily to read over KEY WORDS and
DEFINITIONS even if it is only 20 minutes.
  • This is a way to transfer info from short to long
    term memory

4
Use the Context
  • Is it a verb or a noun?
  • Can I use it in a sentence?
  • Does it have a prefix or suffix?

5
Use the Context (Continued)
  • Knowing the usage of the word in the sentence can
    help determine its meaning.
  • Knowing prefixes and suffixes can also help.

6
Use the Context (Continued)
  • For example, take the word dismember.
  • Dis- is a prefix meaningaway from the opposite
    of not.
  • The word dismember would mean not a member,
    or to tear apart.
  • I was able to infer the meaning from knowing
    what the prefix meant.

7
Context (Continued)
  • Use a thesaurus or dictionary to check the
    meaning.
  • (The Websters New World Dictionary for
explorers of language by Simon Schuster is a
    useful source.
  • The Muskingum College CAL Learning Strategies
    Database is another excellent source.

  • Dismembernot a member.
  • Disinfectnot infected.
  • Disproportionatenot in proportion.
  • Disablenot able to use.
  • Disbandnot together.
  • Disembarknot go.
  • Check meanings if unsure.

10
Vocabulary (Continued)
  • John and Eddie dismembered their clubhouse to
make more space in the yard.
  • (This is my sentence using the word dismember).

11
Next . . .
  • Now it is your turn to try and brainstorm and
    retain new vocabulary words.
  • Take the prefix bioPertains to life
  • Use 30 seconds to write down words that begin
    with bio-

12
Your Turn (Continued)
  • After 30 seconds has passed, stop and go back and
try to write/say the definitions of your words.
  • Use the dictionary/thesaurus to check
    definitions.
  • Use the words in a sentence.

13
Personal Connection
  • Try to connect the word to a personal experience
    if possible.

14
Flash Cards
  • Maybe seeing the words on flash cards would help
    with retention.
  • (Check in the Encoding Retrieval Strategies
    under the Muskingum College.

    increasing your vocabulary.
