Title: About Wood Moldings

1
About Wood Moldings
  • Molding is carved wood placed on the walls of
homes or businesses. Exterior and interior trim
can be decorative and protective! Installing
interior wood trim and hardwood moldings can add
character to a room and cover blemishes and ugly
drywall joints. Although most people think of
wood moldings as decorative, they can also serve
to protect from wall damage, drafts, and wood
expansion and contraction problems while adding
    value to your property!

2
What is it used for?
  • Base
  • Base
  • Chair
  • Crown

3
What are your choices of moldings? How many
different types of moldings are there?
  • Thats a good question. There are thousands of
different moldings to choose from. If you dont
find one that you like you can have one made
    special for you!
  • Some companies do custom grounding of knives as
well to match profiles - combinations are
    unlimited

4
How expensive is it?
  • Molding is anywhere from .75 to 7.50 a foot or
    more.
  • Some places sell moldings in bundles of board
feet or they place a minimum board foot amount.

5
What types of wood can you use?
  • Any type of soft or hard wood is possible. Maple
Oak Cherry Butternut Walnut Ash Poplar exc.

6
Stained or Painted
  • Yes, usually done to soft wood like pine because
a cheaper wood can be stained to resemble a more
expensive wood. Rarely is staining done to the
hard woods because why would you want to cover up
    their natural beauty.

7
Lengths
  • One can buy wood in all different lengths or he
can cut it himself to fit his project. Usually a
business sells wood in lengths of 8, 10, 12,
    14, and 16.
  • Some places sell moldings in bundles of certain
board feet or they place a minimum board foot
    amount.

8
How is molding made?
9
  • Each Molder has a number of heads or knives
that are used to carve the molding usually five.

10
  • Each head takes off a certain side of the molding
as the board is being fed through the molder.
Sort of like an assembly line where each person
dose a job to complete the project. This is what
the molding machine is doing giving each head a
part of the board to cut.

11
  • In each head you can place up to four blades for
a better or smoother cut. Some moldings dont
require that many because your only taking off a
little wood but others your taking off a full ½
inch, and it also depends on the type of wood.
When using four blades instead of two each knife
has less work because its sharing the burden.
Also with more knives you dont have to sharpen
    them as often.

12
  • If you want a different type of molding you just
have to change the knives in the heads to the
knives that give you the molding that you want.

13
  • As the board is being fed into the molder there
are air pressure rollers that keep pressure on
the board to keep it from moving so the cut is
    clean and square.

14
  • In completion a board is able to be turned into
an unlimited number of different moldings.
