1Strategies to help your child in school
2How can I help my child succeed?
- Encourage your child to read- Read yourself!
- Talk with your child/Listen to your child
- Monitor homework
- Monitor t.v., video games, internet. Consider
eliminating weeknight t.v. - Encourage responsibility-establish rules, enforce
rules, have chores, demonstrate how to break down
jobs into small steps. - Encourage active learning-through sports, museum
visits, outdoor play, musical instruments.
3Helping your child with Homework

- Make it a central location with all the supplies
they need - Help children make a schedule, check assignment
books - Encourage good study habits early.
- Start projects early-break down in steps

- Give praise
- Take a break
4Getting Organized

papers in boxes for reference - Make a family calendar
- Label everything as the season changes-dont
forget to label jackets and sweaters.
5Organization

- Check assignment books
- Study ahead, teach your child to study every
night for Fridays test-good habits - Plan projects ahead
- Use weekends to anticipate the upcoming week,
plan and organize.
6Talk with teachers to resolve problems
- Talk early in school year
- Contact as soon as you suspect your child has
problem. - Approach the teacher with a cooperative spirit.
- Let the teacher know if the assignments are too
hard or too easy. - Make sure you understand what the teacher is
saying-What will you do? What will I do?
7Communicating with teachers
- Ask the teacher which way she/he prefers-voice
mail/email - Please use email carefully. Avoid confrontational
statements. If it is not something you want to
say to someone, dont write it. Take time to cool
down and request a meeting. Misunderstandings
happen. We are all here for your children. We can
resolve things best when we work together.
8What teachers want from parents

slips, etc. - Healthy diet-meals, cleanliness, sleep

the beginning of the year. - Take the time to help your child develop
strategies for tackling problems- academic or
social - Give your child tools for success.
10Whats New?

accelerated pace reading in lower grades, music
and pre-k music. - Ms. Schultz is here an extra day Pre-K-3 have art

- Ability to say No in unwanted situations
- Talk to your parents-no secrets
12Whats new with peer learning?
- Three new strategies are being introduced
Leapfrog Jigsaw Think, Write, Pair,Compare,
Share Pairs Check. - Reflection journal-more writing
- Teachers reviewed end of the year student
evaluations and discussed changes. - 8th graders did skits for the Peer learning Kick
Off.
13Leap frog Jigsaw
- A group of students works with the teacher to
become an expert on a concept or skill. These
students then bring back that information to
their group. Then another student becomes
expert, etc. - Students develop a great sense of pride learning
a new skill and sharing it with others.
14Pairs Check
- Groups of four are split into pairs. One student
is the coach, the other person does the problem.
If problem is done correctly the coach praises,
if not, coach helps. Once problem is correct the
roles are reversed. Then the team reunites to
compare answers. - If agreement is made, team celebrates.
- Teacher monitors.
15Think- Write- Pair -Compare
- Students think about their answers, jot down
their answer, then pair with another to compare
their answers. - Then teachers ask students to share answers.
16Student Gains
- Better understanding of concepts
- Better grades (measurement of better
understanding) - More cooperative classroom atmosphere-we need
each other in order to be successful. - More care for each other and appreciation for
what gifts everyone has to share.
17Favorite part of peer learning
- If someone gets a wrong answer, people in the
group can help so that you can all have the right
answer. - Solving problems together-you arent alone.
- You can create a stronger bond with your class.
- Everyone has a part to do and everyone is
involved.
18How has it been used in classes

- To perform a play
- We reviewed each chapter by using jigsaw.
- To do current events
19What was your favorite memory?

21What would you change about it?

children are able to share their answers. - I would like to have a chance to work with
everyone in the class at some point during the
school year. - Incorporate more strategies.
