What its used for

• Speakers are used to amplify sound waves
• Nice speakers nice sound quality
• Arent as complex as you may think

The parts

Part Functions

• The Cone- made of paper, plastic or metal.
  Attached to the suspension.
• The Suspension- flexible material allowing the
  cone to move. Attached to the basket.
• The Basket- Metal frame of the speakers.
• The Voice Coil- connected to the end of the cone.
  
• The spider- a ring of flexible material. Holds
  the coil in position and allows it to move.

How do speakers connect?

• There are two output wires for each speaker
• The wire in the speaker system connects to the
  hook up jacks on the driver (speaker)

The amplifier

• Controls the signals sent to the speakers
• Positive or negative charge is sent on the red
  wire
• Speakers are known to have alternating currents (
  reverse constantly)
• This causes the polar orientation of the electro
  magnet to change many times

How the Electromagnet works

• Coil of wire is wrapped around a magnetic metal
• Electrical current run through coil causes metal
  to become magnetized
• It has two poles but the poles switch when you
  switch the direction of the current

Why we hear sound

• An electromagnet is positioned above a permanent
  magnet
• When charges are switched it is either attracted
  or repulsed from the per.magnet.
• Since charges switch constantly the coil is
  pushed quickly back and forth.

Why we hear sounds continued

• When the coil moves, the cone moves causing air
  to vibrate.
• Sound waves are created
• The electrical signal put out by the speaker unit
  tells the rate and distance the voice coil moves
• Therefore different frequencies are produced.

Driver Types

• Different systems sometimes use different speaker
  types
• The Woofer- biggest drivers, low frequency
  sounds, slow vibration.
• The Tweeter- Small units for high frequencies.
• Midrange- range of frequencies in the middle.

Other Types of Speakers

• Piezoelectric speakers- computer speakers and
  portable radios.
• Plasma arc loudspeakers- high end TV's, computer
  monitors
• Digital speakers smaller devices
• Flat panel speakers for T.V sets or media
  centers.
