Pronoun Explanations
  • The nouns that pronouns refer to or replace are
    called antecedents.
  • I or We is called first person (the person doing
    the speaking).
  • You is called the second person (the person
    being spoken to).
  • He, she, it they (ie. Everyone else) is called
    the third person (the person or thing being
    spoken about).

Pronoun rules
  • Pronouns must agree with their antecedents in
    number (singular or plural).
  • Pronouns must agree with their antecedents in
    person (1st person, 2nd person, or third person).
  • Pronouns must agree with their antecedents in
    gender (male, female, or neuter for animals and
    inanimate objects)
  • This last (gender) has nothing to do with sex.
    Remember people have sex. Language has gender.
    (It is really not that excitinglanguage, that
    is.)

  • Agreement in person
  • Correct If the boys are ready, they can begin
    the race.
  • Incorrect If the boys are ready, you can begin
    the race.
  • Agreement in number
  • Correct Every student wants to do well on his
    (her) exam. Indefinite pronouns (most of them)
    are singular even when they sound plural.
  • Incorrect Every student wants to do well on
    their exam.
  • Agreement in gender
  • Correct Ellies house has three windows on its
    third floor.
  • Incorrect Ellies house has three windows on her
    third floor.
