1
FR3 In-Service Training
  • -Inspection of PAPR
  • -Donning Doffing PAPR
  • -Cleaning Storage of PAPR

2
Hierarchy of Authority
3
FR3 -84 (Butyl Rubber)
4
FR3 (Tychem)
5
Indications for use of a FR3 PAPR with NP5505
canisters
  • Respiratory protection against certain organic
    vapors, certain acidic gases, ammonia,
methylamine, xylene and formaldehyde. Do not
exceed maximum use concentrations established by
    regulatory standards.
  • Use anytime you experience unexplained burning
sensation of mucous membranes or tearing of eyes.
  • Butyl rubber hood is for use in Histology. Tychem
hood is for use in Bioterrorism situations.

6
Instructions for use
  • Use this respirator only after receiving proper
instructions in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR
    1910.134 (b) (3).
  • Users must take precautions that the respirator
is not worn in atmospheres immediately dangerous
    to life and health (IDLH)
  • Do not alter, modify or substitute any components
    of the respirator.

7
DO NOT USE THIS RESPIRATOR
  • In Explosive atmospheres
  • In Confined spaces or areas of poor ventilation
  • In heat greater than 50 degrees C, (122 degrees
    F).
  • Where sparks or flames can contact the respirator

8
Leave the area immediately and, when in a safe
area, remove the respirator if
  • Dizziness occurs
  • Breathing becomes restricted or difficult
  • Any sign of wearer distress occurs
  • You smell or taste any odor or contaminant
  • You experience an irritation of any kind
  • Airflow falls below a minimum level, or stops, or
the faceshield fogs up and does not clear

9
Inspect the Respirator (for alkaline versions)
  • Make sure 6 high capacity alkaline D cell
batteries are loaded in the battery case

10
Canister connection to blower assembly
  • Remove the black cap and the white plug from the
    canisters.
  • Set plug and cap aside
  • Attach all 3 canisters to the blower assembly by
    turning clockwise.

11
Test airflowDo not use the respirator if the
airflow is not sufficient
  • Test for airflow using the airflow indicator on
the opening of the blower assembly.
  • Make sure the ball rises above the FR3 line.
  • If the airflow indicator does not rise to the
correct level of the tube, replace the batteries
    and retest.
  • If there is still no airflow, replace the
    canisters and retest.

12
Inspection of hood and breathing tube
  • Inspect the hood and breathing tube for holes,
    kinks or twists before donning.

13
Installing the belt
  • Slide the belt through the loops on the side of
    the blower housing

14
Attaching breathing tube
  • Check that the breathing tube is securely
attached to the tube on the hood with the clamp
    provided.
  • Slide the other end of the breathing tube over
the outlet of the blower and secure with the
    clamp provided.
  • Place belt with blower around waist and adjust
belt with the blower setting on the small of your
    back.

15
Three Adjustment Features
  • The first adjustment point is the strap on the
ratchet headgear that passes from side-to-side
over the top of the wearers head. Adjust by using
the two locating pins and the corresponding holes
so that the headgear is tight across the top and
side-to-side on the wearers head. Ensure that
the comfort band is low on the forehead.

16
Adjustment Features
  • The second adjustment point is the plastic wheel
at the back of the ratchet headgear. Rotating the
wheel will increase or decrease the circumference
of the headband. To do this, push in on the wheel
and turn counterclockwise tighten or turn
counterclockwise to loosen the headband. This
step is taken from the outside after the hood has
    been donned.

17
Adjustment Features
  • The third adjustment is a chin strap that is
located on the brim of the ratchet headgear above
the wearers forehead. This strap can be pulled
down and worn under the wearers chin as needed
to prevent the hood from moving when bending over
or crawling. If the first two adjustments were
done correctly and the hood does not ride up in
use there is no need for the use of the chin
    strap,

18
Donning the Hood
  • Ensure that the first adjustment point has been
performed as described in the precious section.
  • Place the hood over your head. From the outside,
tighten the ratchet on the headgear until it is
    snug on your head.
  • Turn the blower on

19
Donning
  • The hood should be fully expanded and you should
not notice any condensation on the faceshield
  • If the hood is not fully expanded check the
breathing tubes for twists or kinks.

20
Doffing the Respirator
  • Never remove respirator in contaminated area
  • When you have reached an uncontaminated area,
    turn the blower off
  • Loosen headgear from outside of hood, remove
    hood.
  • Disconnect belt and set respirator aside for
    cleaning/sanitizing.

21
Cleaning/Sanitizing
  • The respirator should be cleaned after each use
by a designated person or the user. This person
should receive instruction on proper cleaning
    procedures.
  • Take precautions to avoid breathing or touching
    the contaminants on the respirator
  • Do not use alcohol, solvents, harsh detergents,
    gasoline, organic-based solvents or chlorinated
degreasing fluids ( such as trichloroethylene)

22
Cleaning
  • Return plugs to canisters, keeping canisters
    secure to the blower.
  • Using a soft cloth dampened in a mild solution of
clean , warm water and mild detergent, the
exterior of the blower, battery pack and
cartridges should be wiped clean. Let air dry

23
Cleaning
  • Use a damp sponge in mild detergent solution to
wipe the exterior surfaces of the hood and
    breathing tube
  • Allow them to air dry

24
Canister Storage
  • The canisters must be removed and stored or
disposed of in accordance with applicable
    regulations.
  • Check with your safety professional to determine
    the correct procedure
  • If storing, screw on black cap and keep plugs
    attached.

25
Respirator Storage
  • Store the respirator only after proper cleaning
  • Store to prevent deformations of the respirator
  • Store to prevent protect effectively from
damage , contamination, dust, sunlight, extreme
    temperatures, excessive moisture and damaging
    chemicals.

26
Replacing Canisters
  • Canisters must be changed in accordance with the
canister change schedule established in the
    users program
  • FR3 canisters should be replaced after each use,
unless objective information demonstrate that the
canisters can be stored and used again.
  • Canisters must be replaced in sets of three

27
Alerting conditions to replace canisters
  • The following conditions will alert the wearer
that the canisters have reached the end of their
useful life and that they must be replaced, even
though the schedule replacement interval has not
    been achieved
  • One-airflow is reduced because of clogging due to
    filtered particulates
  • Two-replace at first trace of odor or taste or
sign of irritation due to the presence of vapor
    or gas inside respirator
