The MEND Programme
  • Targeted obesity prevention and treatment
    programme
  • Designed for overweight and obese 7-13 year old
    children and their parents / carers
  • Intensive education and behaviour change 10
    weeks, 2 x 2 hr sessions / week, for both
    children and parents
  • Underpinned by a successful multi-site Randomised
    Controlled Trial (RCT) at Institute of Child
    Health, University College London and Great
    Ormond Street Hospital
  • Significant improvements in multiple health
    indicators incl. BMI, waist circumference,
    fitness, self-esteem
  • Very high attendance and retention
  • RCT 97 retention and 86 attendance

The Mini-MEND Programme
  • Primary prevention for all 2 to 4 year old
    children of all weights and their parents/carers
  • 10 x 1.5 hour sessions over 10 weeks
  • Active play, snack time and parent
    discussion/toddler creche with story time
  • Food without fuss, modelling, problem solving,
    fun with food

Feedback from Parents I have totally cut down
the amount of TV my 2 year-old watches. We play
games together instead I really enjoyed doing
sporty things together and it was good to see how
easily we can do these activities at home too

Inviting referrals
  • Over 5,000 children and their parents have
    already completed the MEND Programme
  • We have funding for over 27,000 children and
    their parents to attend the Programme by the end
    of 2009
  • 310 sites are due to commence in Sept-Oct 2008
    (45 are in London)
  • each accepts 12-15 children and parents
  • At least 10 Mini-MEND sites are starting too -
    with more in Jan 2009
  • We accept self-referrals and referrals from
    health professionals
