Day Two-April 7

  • 730a Depart for Presidents Park (White House
    Visitors Center and area around the White
    House)
  • 815a Visit White House for picture taking
    opportunities, White House Visitors Center,
    and time for souvenir shopping along 15th street
    (Possible tour of White House if we get
    tickets)
  • 915a Board buses to go to Capitol Building
  • 945a Tour of Capitol Building, if available
    have picture made with Senator Richard Burr
  • 1130a Walk to the Air and Space Museum and have
    lunch at the food court. After lunch begin
    the Smithsonian Museum tours. Suggestions
    for touring Museum of the American Indian,
    American History Museum, Natural History
    Museum, National Archives, National Art
    Gallery, US Holocaust Museum-Daniels Story,
    Washington Monument (must call ahead for timed
    tickets)
  • 500p IMAX Theater presentation (TBA)
  • 600p Go to Pentagon City Food Court for dinner
  • 800p Ride Metro back to Mall area and visit
    The Jefferson Memorial
  • 930 Return to hotel for the evening

  • Visit the White House Visitors Center to learn
    more about the official home of the President

The Capitol
  • You will meet a person from Senator Richard
    Burrs office who will take you on a guided tour
    of one of the most important buildings in the
    world
  • You will get to view exhibits in the new
    visitors center and see a short video before the
    tour
  • At the conclusion of the tour Senator Burr will
    have a photograph made with the group in which
    the school will receive a copy. (This is
    contingent on Senator Burrs schedule

Mall Area
  • Castle
  • The Smithsonian's first building, popularly known
    as the Castle, houses the Institutions
    administrative offices and the Smithsonian
    Information Center. See a short 10 minute video
    here
  • Museum of Natural History
  • The renowned Hope Diamond is celebrating the
    golden anniversary of its arrival at the
    Smithsonian Institution. Harry Winston gave the
    diamond to the Institution in November 1958. The
    rare 45.52 carat deep-blue diamond was cut from a
    stone found in India about 350 years ago and was
    once part of the French crown jewels.  It was
    also involved in a dramatic theft, and according
    to some legends might even carry a curse!

  • Begin your visit to the Mall area and Smithsonian
    Museums located along the Mall here and enjoy
    lunch
  • See hundreds of artifacts on display including
    the original Wright 1903 Flyer, the Spirit of St.
    Louis, the Apollo 11 command module, and a lunar
    rock sample that visitors can touch.
  • American History
  • Be sure to see the display of the flag that
    inspired The Star Spangled Banner. The almost
    200-year old, 30-by 34-foot flag is
  • displayed in a special environmentally-controlled
    chamber here

  • National Museum of the American Indian
  • The National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI)
    has one of the most extensive collections of
    Native American arts and artifacts in the world
  • Botanic Gardens
  • The USBG includes the Conservatory, the National
    Garden, and Bartholdi Park. The Conservatory
    features a wide variety of living exhibits,
    including seasonal exhibits. Approximately 4,000
    plants are on display.

  • See some of the most famous historical documents
    like The Declaration of Independence, The
    Constitution, The Bill of Rights, and The

  • Washingtons only monument
  • Call ahead for timed tickets to go up in the
    monument. Visit the website http//www.recreation
    .gov or call 1-877-444-6777 to request timed
    tickets. You will need to request tickets for
    times between 100pm and 400pm for April 7.

  • Students can visit the exhibit called Daniels
    Story on the main level

  • At Jamestown Settlement, the story of the people
    who founded Jamestown and of the Virginia Indians
    they encountered is told through film, gallery
    exhibits and living history.

  • Enjoy lunch on the Jamestown site after your tour
  • Time allotted for shopping in the gift store
