- Children ranging in ages from 2 to 15 who have
mild to severe intellectual and/or physical
disabilities or are diagnosed with developmental
disabilities.

- A school for children with special needs that
provides intense educational training as well as
speech and language therapy.

- The Joseph Sams School follows the
- regular academic school year
- calendar.
- The Joseph Sams School is a private
non-profit organization that runs on donations
from individuals, businesses and fundraisers.
6WHYDid I pick the Joseph Sams School to do my
Service Learning?

- I felt that these children could teach me
valuable life lessons. I also wanted to work
with children with special needs. At the Joseph
Sams School I had the opportunity to make a
difference in the lives of children.
7The Experience of a Lifetime
- I worked with all the students at the school
however, I spent most of my time working with
pre-school special needs students.

9I learned a lot about myself when working with
these special students. Volunteering at the
school made me a better person. The work was
both mentally and physically challenging but
worth it. I look forward to helping with these
children in the future. They have impacted my
life and have made me a better person and teacher.

summer of 2002 at the Joseph Sams School.
