Background
  • Georgia OKeeffe was born on November 15, 1887 in
    Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She grew up in a farming
    family in Sun Prairie, and in Williamsburg,
    Virginia.
  • She graduated from Chatham Protestant Episcopal
    Institute in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1904. She
    then studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago,
    and the Art Students League in New York.

Biography
  • OKeeffe has been a major part figure in American
    art since the 1920s. She in chiefly known for
    paintings in which she synthesized abstraction
    and representation in paintings of flowers,
    rocks, shells, animal bones, and landscapes.
  • Her paintings present crisply contoured forms
    with subtle tonal transitions of varying colors.

  • In 1908 OKeeffe was discouraged from her work
    and did not pick up a paint brush. She worked as
    a commercial artist in Chicago. She then became
    an elementary school art teacher near Amarillo,
    Texas.
  • In 1912 see attended summer classes at the
    University if Virginia, and was inspired to paint
    again.

  • Her artistic brilliance revolutionized modern art
    in both her time and in the present. In her
    paintings she portrayed the power of emotion of
    objects in nature. This was first seen in her
    charcoal drawing of silhouette bud-like forms No.
    13 Special 1916/1917 which brought her to fame.

    scale paintings of natural forms at close range,
    as if seen through a magnifying glass.

  • In 1924 she painted her first large-scale flower
    painting Petunia, No. 2.
  • OKeeffe became known as one of Americas most
    important artists.

  • In 1928 six of her calla lily paintings sold for
    25,000.00. dollars. This was the most money ever
    paid for a group of paintings by a living
    American artist.

New Mexico
  • In 1928, Georgia moved part time to New Mexico in
    order to find new things to paint.
  • Here she began collecting and painting bones, and
    started painting the areas distinctive
    architectural and landscape forms.

  • In 1936, Summer Days was completed. It has
    become one of her most famous and well-known
    works.

    During the 1950s she produced a series of

    Metal of Arts in 1985.

  • In 1971 OKeeffes eyesight began to fail. She
    stopped painting in 1972.
  • Georgia moved to Santa Fe where she died on March
    6, 1986.
  • A substantial part of OKeeffes estate went to
    the Georgia OKeeffe Museum established in 1997
    in Santa Fe.
  • In 1998 the Georgia OKeeffe Home and Studio was
    designated a National Historic Landmark.
