Title: Cable Making

Cable Making
  • Network Design and Engineering
  • By John Paul Scarpatti

About Ethernet Cables
  • Common Ethernet cables that are used are either
Cat 5 or Cat 6. Both are mediums that are used to
transmit data over a network between various
    network devices and computers.
  • Crossover cables can also be used to connect
similar devices to each other, such as two
computers or two routers for connecting multiple
    networks.

3
Wiring Color Schemes
  • There are two different standards set for
punching down the various color combination wires
within the actual Ethernet cable. Several wires
are used for transmitting as well as receiving
data that is being sent over.
  • If the color schemes do not match properly, there
is a high chance that the data will not transmit,
or will corrupt that information that is being
    sent through them.
  • The wires must have their outer casing removed in
order to be exposed, but it is important to not
remove too much of the shelling because their
could be crosstalk, or interference, between the
    cables if exposed.

4
Wiring Color Schemes (cont.)
  • Either standard can be used for a basic straight
    through cable
  • A cross between the two is used when making the
    previously mentioned crossover cables. This
requires that one end of the cable is 568B, and
    one 568A

5
Putting it all Together
  • It is important that all of the cables are
untwisted before attempting to put them into the
    RJ-45 plug
  • Using a crimping tool is best suited for
attaching the cable and the plug.
  • Make sure that an ample amount of wiring is cut
when removing the desired amount from the spool
to ensure that you are not short handed when
    using the cable.
