7Streaming Media What is it?
- What is Streaming Media?
- From wikipedia (http//www.wikipedia.org)
- Streaming media is media sound, video, text
that is consumed (read, heard, viewed), mostly in
the form of clips, while it is being delivered.
Streaming is more a property of the delivery
system than the media itself. The distinction is
usually applied to media that are distributed
over computer networks most other delivery
systems are either inherently streaming (radio,
television) or inherently non-streaming (books,
video cassettes, audio CDs).

10Streaming Media How to?
- How do I stream video?
- 1) Make the movie self-contained (one file).
- 2) Hint the movie.
- Movies that are intended for streaming must
include a hint track so the server knows exactly
how to package the media data for the network - http//www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/hinttrack
s.html - 3) Name the movie.
- Use filenames without spaces
- Filenames are case-sensitive (MyMovie isnt
mymovie) - Use the right extension! (.mov for Quicktime,
.ram or .rm for RealMedia, etc.) - 4) Save the settings (video size, sound quality,
etc.). - 5) Publish the movie on a server! For true
streaming, it must be published on a streaming
server. For Flash, QuickTime VR, and other files
that do not truly stream (but act like they do),
publish to a regular web server.
11Adding Sound and Video to Web Pages

video/sound - Using the embed tag
-
- http//www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/embed.htm
l - http//www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/embed2.ht
ml - Advantages
- Sound/video opens inside the web browser
- Designer can specify exact location and
height/width - Disadvantage
- Web page loads more slowly
12Blogging What is a blog?
- From wikipedia (http//www.wikipedia.org)
- A weblog, which is usually shortened to blog, is
a type of website where entries are made (such as
in a journal or diary), displayed in a reverse
chronological order. - Blogs often provide commentary or news on a
particular subject, such as food, politics, or
local news some function as more personal online
diaries. A typical blog combines text, images,
and links to other blogs, web pages, and other
media related to its topic. Most blogs are
primarily textual although many focus on
photographs (photoblog), videos (vlog), or audio
(podcasting).

be created that will inform others of your
podcast. There are two main types of feeds Atom
feeds and RSS feeds. - RSS is the standard for podcasting.
- If you use Blogger to create your blog, be aware
that Blogger only creates Atom feeds. - Services like FeedBurner will translate Atom
feeds into RSS at no cost. - http//www.feedburner.com
