Title: WindowsXP Quicktime Compatibility

1
WindowsXP - Quicktime Compatibility
  • Created with
  • PowerPoint 2003

2
Some Quicktime movies can be played inside
PowerPoint
  • In PowerPoint, choose Insert - Movies Sounds
From File and navigate to your QuickTime Movie.
  • Choose whether you want your movie to play
automatically when the slide opens or only after
a mouse click on the video
  • Warning! Not ALL videos, codecs and versions of
    QuickTime work with PowerPoint.

3
PowerPoints Video Limitations
  • Micrososoft itself can only play back QuickTime
movies (.mov, or .qt files) that use codecs
(compression schemes) that are MCI (Media Control
    Interface) compatible.
  • Incompatible files can still be played using a
    hyperlink and the Quicktime player

4
To Verfiy Full Compatibility with PowerPoint
  • Use Media Player (Not the Microsoft Windows Media
    Player) to test a video.
  • Media Player is a MCI-compliant program (like
PowerPoint) that comes with Windows. Media Player
is MCI compliant but not Windows Media Player.

5
Procedure for Testing Compatibility using Media
Player
  • Click START - RUN.
  • Type mplay32.exe (in WindowsXP) and click
    Click OK.
  • When Media Player opens, choose File Open.
  • Select the QuickTime movie that you want to
verify. Click Open. If the movie is not
compatible, Media Player will not be able to open
    and play it.
  • A movie like this cannot be played in PowerPoint
without converting it to a compatible compression
    format (e.g. AVI)

6
What is the AVI de facto movie standard and why
is it important?
  • AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave format. AVI
was defined by Microsoft and is the most common
    Windows video format .
  • AVI is Microsofts own standard, and any
Quicktime movie can be converted to AVI.

7
Using QuickTime Pro to convert to AVI format
  • Use QuickTime Pro to open any QuickTime file
  • On the File menu, click Export, and set the
Export file type to Movie to AVI
  • Click Options, and then click Settings.
  • In the Compressor group, click the list of
compressors and choose one from the previous
    list. (Cinepak is popular)
  • Check that the extension on the file name is .avi
    and Save.
  • AVI files can usually be played in PowerPoint

8
What is a Codec?
  • A codec (compressor / decompressor) is an
algorithm used to record digital video or audio.
  • It is chosen based on the the users audio or
    image quality preferences

9
Checklist for playing Quicktime files in
PowerPoint
  • The mov registry value must be present (cf.
    specifics on the next slide)
  • The video codec used must be available to
    decompress the video
  • The codec used must also be compatible with
    PowerPoint

10
Troubleshooting Specifics
  • An Administrator may have to create a Quicktime
Registry entry. The mov registry value must
be present on the computer and associated with
    the string value MPEGVideo
  • The specific video codec used in the video must
be present on the computer. To determine which
    codec is neededEither,
  • Open the .mov file in Microsoft Windows Media
Player. Click FILE PROPERTIES. The Video codec
setting identifies the codec used to make the
    video, or,
  • Open the video in QuickTime Player. Click
WindowShow Movie Info. The Format setting
    identifies the video codec

11
Troubleshooting Specifics (cont.)
  • Verify that a particular codec is installed on
the computer (cf. StartControl PanelSounds and
Audio DevicesHardware. Select Video Codecs in
the devices box, and click Properties. In the
Video Codec Properties dialog box, click the
Properties tab and look for the Codec.
  • 4. To confirm whether the codec is compatible
with PowerPoint try playing it in Media Player
(mplay32.exe not the more familiar Windows Media
Player) Media Player will open and play
    compatible movies.

12
If all else fails
  • Quicktime videos can be hyperlinked to a
PowerPoint slide. When you click on the link,
Windows launches the Quicktime viewer (if
installed) and should play the video in a
    separate application.
  • Heres how.

13
Linked Quicktime Movies
  • To create a link, select the object or text that
will be the visible link, and choose Insert
Hyperlink, and under Link to select Existing
File or Web Page. Browse to the movie you want
    to play and click OK
  • Always test this beforehand.

14
iMovie can export videos in the AVI format
  • AVI is a highly Windows-compatible format, if you
save your iMovie video in AVI you avoid many
problems. (Warning this is not the default!)
  • In iMovie, select File Export, change the
Export format to Quicktime and select Expert
    Settings for the export format.
  • Click Export and verify the Movie to AVI
setting, and then save the movie as an AVI video.
  • This video should be fully compatible with
    PowerPoint
