Introduction and Background

• The University for Peace (UPEACE) was created
  within the framework of the United Nations,
  pursuant to Resolution 35/55 of the General
  Assembly
• 1982 1999 programmes essentially for Central
  and Latin American students
• 1999 2005 Five-year revitalization programme

• Provide an international institution of higher
  education for peace
• Promote a spirit of understanding, tolerance
  peaceful coexistence
• Stimulate cooperation
• Help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace
  progress

• Run an efficient Headquarters campus in Costa
  Rica with 8 MA Programmes for 160 students
• Provide some 80 full and partial scholarships to
  students from developing countries
• Deliver one Distance Learning MA Programme and
  prepare curriculum for a new one
