What Is Addiction To Prescription Drugs?
Addiction is classified as a physiological and
psychological need for a habit-forming chemical.
The most common of drugs to be addicted to are
painkillers, such as morphine, codeine, or
cocaine extracts such as heroin.
4
What Causes Addiction?
Addiction can be caused be a number of things,
the most common being over prescription by
inexperienced doctors. Doctors have a tendency to
prescribe drugs in amounts that are not needed
and in times when not required. Many people are
prescribed a drug like codeine and develop a
chemical dependency which makes them believe that
they must have the drug to function properly.
Other people suffer from an addictive personality
which makes them susceptible to addiction.
5
What Prescription Drugs Are Most Commonly
Addiction Causing?
The most common addiction causing of
prescription drugs are muscle relaxants and pain
relieving drugs. The reason for this is that they
are commonly prescribed for all uses, foe
example, when someone has a bad cold, codeine
with acetaminophen is prescribed to control pain,
where it is not truly necessary. Muscle relaxants
are commonly prescribed to people with back pain,
many of these patients are not only taking
advantage of the work insurance programs, but
also the medical system and perhaps develop an
addiction.
6
How to Treat Addiction
Addiction can be treated in many manners, but
most always should be treated as a disease that
needs constant help. The first part of treating
it is deciding that there is a problem in the
first place, this is important because the
addicted person will be more receptive to
treatment. After a decision has been made to
start treatment the patient is put on a program
which slowly decreases the amount of the drug
they take. This is done so as not to create
withdrawal symptoms. After the patient has gone
through the stages of addiction and have given up
the drug completely it is up to the patient to
continue not using the drug.
