Columbus Day

• Columbus is born in Genoa in 1451
• By the age of 14, he takes to the sea.
• 1485, Columbus moves to Spain, settling at Palos
  in Andalusia.

• August 3, 1492 Departs from Palos, Spain (near
  Huelva)
• Commanded three ships the Niña, the Pinta and
  the Santa Maria.
• New world sighted on October 12, 1492 by Rodrigo
  de Triana, somewhere in the Bahamas.

• Columbus discovery of the New World inspired
  many sailors to sail further west
• This is why America was found
• That is why we celebrate Columbus Day

• Their first winter was devastating.
• They had lost 46 of the original 102 who sailed
  on the Mayflower.

• But the harvest of 1621 was a good one.

  with a feast -- including 91 Indians who had
  helped the Pilgrims survive their first year
• And this is why we call it Thanksgiving
