CMS Simulation News
The simulation chain in CMSSW_1_0_0 is a complete
set geometry, field, hits, digis for pixels,
strips, Ecal, Hcal, Muons (CSC, DT, RPC).
For Computing, Software, and Analysis gt 40
million Min Bias, Challenge (CSA06)
5.8 million ttbar,

gt 3 million Z to mm
Xeon(TM) CPU 3.6 GHz
Commissioning of the CMSSW simulation chain for
CSA06 (generator, G4 det simulation, digis) was a
big success LPC PSM had a lot to do with it

PSM at the LPC
Responsibilities in international CMS
Simulation Group co-coordination Software
Validation Suite Group coordination (D.
Elvira). Julia Yarba is a key contributor to
infrastructure development, integration of
simulation chain and validation suite, testing
(debugging timing studies), and support
(questions, tutorials).
We have generated significant user based
simulation activity at the LPC and made a
difference in CMS with a relatively small
resource investment from CD/PSM.
If you are a member of international CMS and work
on simulations, the LPC is the best place to be

Example The Software Validation Suite
Set of packages to automatically perform
release-to-release validation of generator,
simulation, reconstruction software.

more new people from US and international CMS
LPC original SVS group
Late in 2005 LPC Simulation Validation activity
was upgraded to a CMS Sofware Validation effort (
within the Software Group) September 2006

  • New group potential to generate physics
    activity at the LPC.
  • It pays off to bring your student or post-doc to
the LPC. You can make a visible contribution to
    international CMS through the LPC.

Hints of a PSM/Simulations Tactical Plan
  • Detector Simulation.Goal
  • Support and Advance the detector simulation needs
    associated
  • with the Fermilab scientific program.
  • Detector Simulation.Strategy
  • Build a detector simulation core group at
    Fermilab.
  • Develop expertise at the level of tool kit
development among the members of the Fermilab
    detector simulation core group.
  • Develop expertise at the level of detector
simulation application among Fermilab users by
    initiating and stimulating simulation activity,
as well as by providing direct support to
    projects and users.

8
  • Simulation/Detector Simulation
  • Objectives for FY07
  • Secure Fermilab membership in the Geant4
Collaboration with full representation in the
    institutional boards.
  • Initiate Geant4 development activities in the
areas of numerical stability, time performance,
    hadronic physics, physics validation.
  • Simulation/Detector Simulation/Geant4
    Development
  • 3. Support of LHC Physics Center (LPC) and CMS
    simulation activities.
  • Simulation/Detector Simulation/CMS Support
    Development
  • Simulation/Detector Simulation/LPC Support
  • 4. Support efforts towards building
    infrastructure to facilitate International Linear
    Collider simulation activity at Fermilab
  • Simulation/Detector Simulation/ILC Support
    Development
  • 5. General support to individual Fermilab
Geant4 users at the application development
    level.
  • Simulation/Detector Simulation/Geant4
    General Support

9
Youll see in the draft details on
  • Activity time, timescale, milestones, metrics
  • Priorities
  • Change Control
  • Risk Assessment

Staffing
4.3
FTE 5. General Support (Internal Transfer-1 FTE)
0.7 FTE 3. LPC/CMS
infrastructure support (S. Banerjee-0.4 FTE,

D. Elvira-0.5 FTE,

J.Yarba-0.4 FTE) 1.3 FTE 2. Geant4
Development (S. Banerjee-0.6 FTE
D. Elvira-0.2 FTE
Internal
Transfer-0.3 FTE
M. Fischler/M. Paterno-0.6 FTE
J. Yarba-0.6 FTE)
2.3 FTE 4. Linear
Collider. Dont know how the lab will organize
this effort which would benefit from (2)
but will need significant extra help. This
item is really a place holder.

Summary
  • With very little man-power our proto-Geant4 core
group initiated, enabled, and currently supports
a significant amount of simulation activity
    related to Fermilab research programs.
  • Follow model of creating user based teams for
relevant projects. PSM never implemented a
detector or performed a physics study for CMS.
  • It is time to take the next step Geant4 toolkit
    development.
  • Need to explore opportunities to collaborate with
other Fermilab groups, user institutions. (Strong
interest in hadronic physics HSSW at FNAL in
    Sep. 06.)
  • Explore the possibility of external funding (ex.
    NSF).

Daniel to attend G4 Collaboration workshop Oct.
9-15th Are we ready to present a proposal based
on this plan ?
