National Institute for Health Research
  • National Director of RD will run NIHR

    deliver the strategy
  • 3 Institutes will oversee the NHS knowledge
    management system

The money
  • 650m DH RD money growing by 100m to 2008
  • MRC money - 350m
  • Currently biased towards South East
  • Changes will mean removal of current funding
    system (and money) over 3 years
  • All research providers will need to bid through
    competitive processes to attract funds under the
    new schemes

  • Will we get growth in research funding in the
    north west?
  • North west 6.8m people. Get 32m. London
    7.4m people. Get 340m
  • What will happen if funds being withdrawn causes
    financial problems in a trust, particularly in
    the south east?
  • Will there be a political dimension to decisions
    that are taken?
