• Vision to improve the health and wealth of the
  nation through research
• Mission to create a health research system in
  which the NHS supports outstanding individuals,
  working in world-class facilities, conducting
  leading-edge research, focused on the needs of
  patients and the public

National Institute for Health Research

• National Director of RD will run NIHR
• Advisory Board being established
• Will provide the support and infrastructure to
  deliver the strategy
• 3 Institutes will oversee the NHS knowledge
  management system

NIHR Faculty

• Will bring together researchers under one
  structure
• Separate from patient care budget
• Senior Investigators, Investigators and Trainees

Infrastructure

• Research networks 6 established (cancer, mental
  health, diabetes, medicines for children,
  dementia and neurodegenerative diseases, stroke),
  Primary Care being commissioned, plus geographic
  generic networks
• Network of Clinical Trials Units - collaboration
• Clinical research facilities for experimental
  medicine collaboration
• Technology platforms bid process underway (8m)
• National Schools for Research Primary Care,
  Public Health, Social Care

• New programmes Challenge fund for Innovation,

• Creating a governance network building on
  Greater Manchesters Research Passport
• A single IT system for researchers and research
  management
• A national advice service for researchers
• Research ethics implementation plan recently
  consulted on, streamlining and improving the
  ethical review process

The money

• 650m DH RD money growing by 100m to 2008
• MRC money - 350m
• Currently biased towards South East
• Changes will mean removal of current funding
  system (and money) over 3 years
• All research providers will need to bid through
  competitive processes to attract funds under the
  new schemes

• Will we get growth in research funding in the
  north west?
• North west 6.8m people. Get 32m. London
  7.4m people. Get 340m
• What will happen if funds being withdrawn causes
  financial problems in a trust, particularly in
  the south east?
• Will there be a political dimension to decisions
  that are taken?
