• From industry meeting agreement there needed to
  be an improvement in Traffic Control after
  chipsealing
• More emphasis needed on Positive Traffic
  Management (COPTTM C10)
• Active Temporary Traffic Control
• Passive Temporary Traffic Control

• First trial in 2000
• Dramatic results
• Scabbing reduced from 240 m/km to 85 m/km
• 65 reduction in scabbing

Wanganui Trial Results - Analysis

• West Wanganui resurfaces about 90 km (11 of the
  network) per annum
• Reduction in scabbing by 175 m/km over 120 to 140
  sites saves
• 60,000 to 70,000 in rework costs (to the
  contractor)
• 90,000 to 100,000 to the client (as contractor
  would have allowed for rework costs in tender
  price).

Wanganui Traffic Control Clauses Original

• Original Clause (2001 2008)
• Traffic Control Layout COPTTM figures E2.6 and
  E2.7 (Two-way Two- lane Level 1 road, one lane
  closure)
• Minimum 48 hours
• Minimum of two workers on site
• Use coned lanes to move the traffic over the full
  width of the carriageway at a reduced speed

• 48 hours, may reduce to 36 hours for
• Single coat grade 5 or 6, or,
• Traffic count lt 2000 VPD
• Contractor may nominate alternative seal types
• Continuous management of each site
• Use of road cones to ensure whole of new surface
  is uniformly compacted
