Title: VTB Conference Overview
1VTB Conference Overview
VTB Users and Developers Conference September
15-16, 2004 Adams Mark Hotel Columbia, SC
- Roger DougalVTB Project Director
- Dept of Electrical Engineering
2Conference Mission
To gather together those many experts, from many
disciplines, who have created and used the VTB
software, in order to exchange information that
will advance our collective capabilities for
virtual prototyping of engineered systems.
VTB transcends any one research program.
Contributions to its technology and
implementation come from many directions and from
many projects. It ubiquitously appears in an ever
increasing spectrum of research and design
activities. Our focus will be on the software
itself and how it can be usefully applied, rather
than on any one of the myriad of projects that
use it or help to develop it. Each of you are
welcome to contribute knowledge and resources to
further advance its capabilities.

4VTB Goals
- Develop the worlds most capable, flexible,
applicable, simulator for interdisciplinary
dynamic systems - Provide an interactive, immersive, realtime,
adaptable simulation environment that is
supported on many platforms - Support both top-down and bottom-up design
approaches, accounting for parameter uncertainty
and partial data, allowing complex
multiresolutional models, using many model
development tools - Support incremental virtual prototyping via
hardware in the simulation loop
5What you will see
- New advances in simulation theory and new
capabilities (simulation of uncertain systems,
power hardware in the loop, controller in the
loop, etc) yield new opportunities to improve the
design process, to make it more efficient,
faster, and cheaper - Wide open environment encourages collaboration
and sharing of expertise - VTB provides a superior mechanism to test
controls - VTB provides a superior mechanism to evaluate and
test electric plant design concepts (or dynamic
systems in general) - VTB provides a mechanism to test new hardware in
a system context without having the entire system
already built - S3D will be the first embodiment of the software
in a form that specifically supports the navy
ship building industry
6Organizational Things
- Commercial wireless network access is available
in this room - register at front desk - Lunch will be served in the Atrium area
- Dinner this evening - many restaurants in the
Congaree Vista area (south to Gervais St., then
east across Assembly St.) - Conclude tomorrow at 440
- User workshop on Fri 800 - 330 (to accommodate
early flights, but stay longer if you wish) is at
the Swearingen Engineering building on USC campus
