11Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine
Each herbal medicine prescription is tailored to
the individual patient and their health
requirements. The balance and interaction of all
the ingredients are vital in achieving the
desired result.
12Acupuncture and Fertility
- Chinese medicine has a long history of
successfully improving fertility - TCM is now being used to support modern medicine,
with clinical trials demonstrating acupuncture
can improve the success rates of assisted
reproduction therapies such as in vitro
fertilisation (IVF)
13Acupuncture and Fertility
- Chinese Medicine during IVF therapy can help to
ease side effects of the medication, calm
anxiety, improve egg quality and promote blood
flow to the uterus. All these encourage the body
to accept the pregnancy. - Male health will affect sperm quality. Research
has shown that acupuncture is effective in
enhancing sperm quality, in particular morphology
and motility.
14Acupuncture and Pregnancy
- 1st Trimester (0-12wks)
- Weekly acupuncture treatments are recommended to
reduce the risk of miscarriage and ease morning
sickness and fatigue by strengthening and
promoting blood flow to the uterus. - 2nd Trimester (13-28wks)
- At this stage when the pregnancy is strong and
stable, treatments are scheduled
- once a month. The aim is to address any
ailments such as heartburn, muscular pain,
anxiety and sleep disturbances. - 3rd Trimester (28-40wks)
- The focus at this stage is to reduce the risk of
gestational diabetes, high blood pressure and
oedema. - Weekly treatments are recommended at 36 weeks to
prepare the body for birth - Weeks 34-36 is the ideal time to address breech
babies.
15Acupuncture and Pregnancy
- Birth
- Acupressure points to use during labour are
discussed in a session with the expecting mother
and her partner. These points aid pain control
and support the mother in having an efficient
labour.
- Post Natal Care
- Pregnancy places a huge demand both physically
and mentally on the mother. - Chinese medicine can provide support for a whole
range of postnatal complaints including fatigue,
mastitis, lack of milk production, abdominal
cramping, constipation, uterine bleeding and
emotional concerns.
