seniors to access necessary information for
    independent living

4
What is the Charleswood Senior Centre?
  • The Charleswood Senior Centre opened in 1999
during the International Year of the Older Person
  • Was originally located in Royal School 450 Laxdal
    Road
  • In October 2004 the Centre expanded to two
locations and we now are located at both Royal
School and the Municipal Building at 5006 Roblin
    Boulevard
  • We have expanded from a 20 person Senior Advisory
Committee in the year 2000 to an organization
    with almost 400 members
  • Since foundation, the Centre has received and
    been nominated for many awards

5
Our Programs
  • The Charleswood Senior Centre prides itself on
offering a large array of programs, to meet the
wants and needs of all of its members
  • Program categories include Social, Fitness,
    Speakers, Education, Annual Programs
  • We also have a number of Outreach Initiatives

6
Outreach Initiatives
  • Snow Angels Program

7
Snow Angel Outreach Program
  • The Centre always looks for new ways to benefit
    Seniors within the community
  • This is one of the first programs to encompass
the new Centre ideal of multi-generational
    programming
  • This is the first program that the Centre has
offered that takes advantage of the Internet to
provide the entire community with information
    about the program
  • http//www.winnipegsnowangels.com

8
What is a Snow Angel?
  • The snowfall in winter causes challenges for some
Winnipeggers to keep their sidewalks clear and
    avoid falls.
  • Winnipeg seniors need extra help in the winter,
keeping their sidewalks shovelled, ice-free, and
    safe.
  • The Snow Angel Outreach Program that encourages
Winnipeggers to be good neighbours and help
seniors in need with snow removal during the
    winter.

9
What do Snow Angels Do?
  • Snow Angels adopt a seniors sidewalk during the
    winter and keep it clear
  • All a person has to do to get involved is watch
for seniors neighbourhood that could use help
removing snow from their sidewalks and driveways
and ask if they can lend a hand
  • They can also contact the Centre to be paired
    with a Senior

10
Why is this Program So Important?
  • Snow Angels are not only being a good neighbour
but a Snow Angel could help to save a life
  • There is often an increase in calls to paramedics
for cardiac illness and arrest on days with heavy
    snow fall
  • Many people are less active during the winter
months and sudden activity, like shovelling snow
can cause your heart muscles to work harder
  • Everyone and most importantly, the elderly are
inclined to cardiac arrest due to over exertion
  • By adopting a seniors sidewalk or driveway a Snow
Angel is helping to keep our seniors safer and
healthier and allowing them to enjoy or Famous
    Winnipeg Winters!!!

11
Who Created the Snow Angels?
  • The Charleswood Senior Centre is the first to
bring this fabulous program to the City of
    Winnipeg
  • The program was originally created by the City of
Calgary, and many other cities have adopted it
    since then
  • The Winnipeg program is generously supported by
    the New Horizons Grant

12
Benefits to the Volunteer
  • Help to ensure that people are not house-bound
    during the winter
  • Potentially save the life of a Senior
  • Emergency vehicles need a clear driveway in order
    to respond to an emergency
  • Great Exercise!
  • Employers, post-secondary education facilities ,
and scholarships now look for the total package
    which includes
  • Well rounded individuals (academic, volunteering,
    sports, and so on)
  • Without volunteer work, many employers/post-secon
dary education facilities will not even consider
    the applicant

13
Snow Angel Poster
  • This is the poster that the Centre has created to
    advertise the Outreach Program.

14
Outreach Initiatives
  • Afternoon Tea Dances

15
What is an Afternoon Tea Dance?
  • A dance starting at 130 PM on the last Friday of
    every month
  • The afternoon is more desirable for seniors,
because it avoids the worries of night-driving
  • Everyone is welcome!!
  • A participant does not need to come with a dance
    partner

16
What is an Afternoon Tea Dance? (Continued)
  • This great program is offered to both Members and
    Non-Members
  • The Dances are held at different locations, in
order to make them accessible to all members of
    the community
  • The program costs just 5.00 to participate in
  • The 5.00 covers dainties, coffee, live musical
entertainment and a great time had by all!!!

17
Why Have Afternoon Tea Dances?
  • The mobility of the program allows the Centre to
reach Seniors who may otherwise be isolated and
    lonely
  • It is a great way to mingle with others
  • It is a fun way to stay active and get out of the
    house
  • Allows participants to find out about the Centre
and its vast array of programs and services
  • This encourages people to become members of the
    Centre and stay active
  • A healthy and active lifestyle helps Seniors to
    remain in the community longer
