7Snow Angel Outreach Program
- The Centre always looks for new ways to benefit
Seniors within the community - This is one of the first programs to encompass
the new Centre ideal of multi-generational
programming - This is the first program that the Centre has
offered that takes advantage of the Internet to
provide the entire community with information
about the program - http//www.winnipegsnowangels.com
8What is a Snow Angel?
- The snowfall in winter causes challenges for some
Winnipeggers to keep their sidewalks clear and
avoid falls. - Winnipeg seniors need extra help in the winter,
keeping their sidewalks shovelled, ice-free, and
safe. - The Snow Angel Outreach Program that encourages
Winnipeggers to be good neighbours and help
seniors in need with snow removal during the
winter.
9What do Snow Angels Do?
- Snow Angels adopt a seniors sidewalk during the
winter and keep it clear - All a person has to do to get involved is watch
for seniors neighbourhood that could use help
removing snow from their sidewalks and driveways
and ask if they can lend a hand - They can also contact the Centre to be paired
with a Senior
10Why is this Program So Important?
- Snow Angels are not only being a good neighbour
but a Snow Angel could help to save a life - There is often an increase in calls to paramedics
for cardiac illness and arrest on days with heavy
snow fall - Many people are less active during the winter
months and sudden activity, like shovelling snow
can cause your heart muscles to work harder - Everyone and most importantly, the elderly are
inclined to cardiac arrest due to over exertion - By adopting a seniors sidewalk or driveway a Snow
Angel is helping to keep our seniors safer and
healthier and allowing them to enjoy or Famous
Winnipeg Winters!!!
11Who Created the Snow Angels?
- The Charleswood Senior Centre is the first to
bring this fabulous program to the City of
Winnipeg - The program was originally created by the City of
Calgary, and many other cities have adopted it
since then - The Winnipeg program is generously supported by
the New Horizons Grant
12Benefits to the Volunteer
- Help to ensure that people are not house-bound
during the winter - Potentially save the life of a Senior
- Emergency vehicles need a clear driveway in order
to respond to an emergency - Great Exercise!
- Employers, post-secondary education facilities ,
and scholarships now look for the total package
which includes - Well rounded individuals (academic, volunteering,
sports, and so on) - Without volunteer work, many employers/post-secon
dary education facilities will not even consider
the applicant
13Snow Angel Poster
- This is the poster that the Centre has created to
advertise the Outreach Program.
