Phillis Wheatley
  • Phillis Wheatley was born a slave. She was
    taught to read and write. She was the first
    published black author. Some of her works of art
    included poems about learning virtue, patriotism,
    battles, and the greatness of America. Phillis
    was given her freedom in 1778.

Molly Brandt
  • Brandt was a housekeeper and concubine of 9
    children with Sir William Johnson. She handled
    all his accounts, did purchasing along with sums
    of money, spent a lot of money on clothing,
    blankets, and rum. She was highly respected by
    the Mohawk Indian Clan. She supplied shelter and
    gathered information against the rebels. For

Dolly Payne Madison
  • Dolly Payne Madison was raised as a Quaker. She

Jessee Freemont
  • Jessee Freemont was married to John C. Freemont.
    She traveled with him on his many journeys and
    became involved in politics during 1849 while in
    San Francisco, CA. She became highly involved in
    the Civil War effort by supporting anti-slavery
    campaigns. She wrote many books about her
    adventures in the West.

Major Pauline Cushman
  • Major Pauline Cushman was a spy for the Union
    Army. She became a spy after being approached by
    two Confederate officers. Being loyal to the
    Union Mrs. Cushman, an actress by trade, traveled
    throughout the South gathering information for
    the Union Army. She was eventually captured,
    tried, and found guilty. Rescued by the
    advancing Union army, Mrs. Cushman retired from
