A guide to the BMJ Journals websites what they
can do and how to use them

The BMJ Journals Online Collection is more than
just the electronic version of the print
journals. They are still the journals that you
know and trust but with many added features not
available in print.

• Read issues before they are published in print
• Search the entire back archive using keywords,
  citation, or authors name.
• Find information relevant to your interest or
  speciality
• Make use of our email-a-friend feature to share
  articles.
• Gain access to over 900 other journals on
  HighWire Press
• Register with the sites for free to make full use
  of these features and many more.

Searching
The advanced search allows you to search for
articles in any BMJ Journal or in any of the 800
HighWire journals (see http//highwire.stanford.ed
u or slide 13)
Use the quick search box at the top right of any
page to search by author name, citation or
keyword.
Alternatively use the Search link on the
homepage for more advanced searching.
You can browse through the archive using the
Current issue or Past issues link on the
homepages.

Topic collections
One of the best ways to find content relevant to
your interests is to use the Browse by topic
link on the journals homepage. Every article in
the BMJ Journals online is assigned to topical
areas originally devised for the electronic
version of the BMJ, making it easy to search
across more than one journal. BMJ Journals have
over 250 clinical and non-clinical topic
collections.
You can register with the site for free to
receive email notification when a new article is
added to your chosen collection(s).

The Latest issue and Online First
Click on the journal cover on the homepage or the
Current issue link.
Some of our sites post articles that have been
accepted for publication but have not yet
appeared in the paper journal, allowing you
access to selected articles in their raw
manuscript form a few days after acceptance. To
see these articles go to the journal homepage and
click on the Online First logo.
You can register for our free email alerting
service that will send you notification when the
latest issue is online.

Email alerts
Email alerts provide you with a time-saving
solution to keep abreast of each new online issue
of your BMJ journal. An email is sent to
your inbox letting you know the new issue is
available and allowing you to browse the latest
table of contents immediately, including
articles, letters and reviews.
To sign up click on the new content alerts link
on the homepage. You will need to register with
the site for this free service.

Your interests straight to your inbox
Receive emails when content matching your
interests is published. Keyword and Search
term alerts can notify you when
articles matching your criteria are published in
any BMJ Journal, HighWire journal, or in journals
listed in PubMed/Medline.
Click on Citation tracker on the homepage and
follow the simple instructions. You will need to
register with the site for this free service.

Track topics, papers and authors
Sign up for our CiteTrack service, well let you
know by email whenever new content in your chosen
BMJ Journal is published.
You can customise CiteTrack to let you know when
new topics are added to, when authors publish new
papers on the site and whenever an article that
you are interested in is referenced by another
paper.

Looking for an older article?
You can browse the archives of all the BMJ
Journals using the Browse by issue link on the
journal homepage, or the Archive button which
is on every page. After 12 months all articles
are free. If the article you want to read is less
than 12 months old and you or your institution
are not subscribers, you can purchase a single
article or access to the whole site for 30 days.
Click on the full text link of the required
article and follow the Pay Per View/SitePass
instructions.
The full text of some articles may not be
available online. We are currently working on a
project that will make our entire back archive,
dating back 50 years or more, available in PDF
format. In the meantime you can order copies of
older articles from the BMA document delivery
service. Use the Find older articles link on
each homepage.

Articles How do you want to read them?
View the latest articles and research for your
favourite journals online. Every article is
available as an abstract, extract, in full text
or as a PDF. Simply click for the format you
require. You do not need a subscription to read
the abstract or extracts of our articles.

Something to say about an article?
Comment on any article published online. By
following the Submit a response link on any
article you can submit your opinions directly to
the journal. If suitable, these are published
within 48 hours and an email is sent to the
original author notifying them of your comments
on their paper.

For all the BMJ Journals, the manuscript
submission and tracking process is conducted
entirely online using our BenchgtPress system.

A gateway to over 900 journals
The BMJ Journals Online Collection is hosted by
HighWire Press, alongside 800 other journals.
All of these journals can be accessed through the
HighWire Portal. The site has been designed to
help researchers comprehensively search and gain
access to the literature easily - both journals
they regularly read and literature in journals
they might otherwise miss - and to help
librarians support their researchers and
institutions with more complete and improved
services. You can use the HighWire Portal to
receive content alerts from multiple publishers
and search across as many journals as you like.
You can personalise the HighWire Portal to
display links to your favourite journals and
manage all your subscriptions at once. Register
for free at http//highwire.stanford.edu.

Other Features of the BMJ Journals Collection
Email a friend recommend an article to a friend
using this free feature, available on any
abstract, full text or PDF. Feedback to give
us your feedback on the site or if you have any
general queries, click the Feedback button at
the top of any page. Free reference links
automatic full-text linking is provided for any
reference that cites another HighWire journal
(see highwire.stanford.edu for a full
list). Future content websites list recently
accepted papers and the table of contents for the
next issue as soon as it is available, often up
to 6 weeks before the issue is published. Medline
/PubMed search 12 million bibliographic
citations and author abstracts from nearly 5,000
biomedical journals. RSS receive automatic
updates every time the site is updated with our
RSS feeds. There are two feeds available the
current issue, and back issues. To find out more
or to subscribe to a feed use the links from the
homepages.

Other Features of the BMJ Journals Collection
Citation manager author harvesting of
references. Citation map see a visual
representation of the HighWire articles citing or
cited by your selected article. Readers
Favourites click on the Top 10 Papers button
on the homepage to see the most read articles
each month. Data supplements additional
material online that doesnt appear in the print
journal. Look out for additional tables,
references, videos, images etc. Folders
registered users can save searches or selected
articles for future reference using our Folders
feature. Images as PowerPoint slides turn any
image into a slide for teaching at the click of a
button. Click on the image to access this feature.
