QASA - Who are we?
  • Acknowledged by the Queensland Government as the
peak industry body for the provision of strategic
advice information on all skills and training
    matters in the Automotive Industry
  • An industry engagement model identified by the
Government under the auspice of the Queensland
    Skills Plan

3
Automotive Industry - Nationally
  • Australia currently supports a comprehensive
Automotive supply chain from manufacturing, to
    retail sales, repair and servicing.
  • Employees over 320,000 people in approximately
65,000 mostly small to medium sized operations.
  • Incorporates passenger and commercial vehicles,
heavy machinery, outdoor power equipment, farm
    machinery, recreational boating, motorbikes and
    bicycles.

4
Automotive Industry - Queensland
  • The Queensland Automotive Industry has seen a
relatively subdued level of activity during 2009
in comparison to the preceding years of economic
growth. Employment in the industry has been
tapered, albeit with growth in some specialist
    skill sectors.
  • The labour market remains a major weakness in the
current economic climate, however some economist
suggest that demand for skilled workers remains
    strong.

    constant changes. This includes
  • Use of specialised hand and power tools,
    diagnostic tools, scanners
  • Electrics versus electronics and integration with
    mechanical systems e.g. mechatronics
  • Future fuels diesel constant pressure rails,
ethnol, biogas, LPG liquid injection, CNG
  • 4WD technology

11
Emerging Technologies Workforce Changes
  • Diagnostic/troubleshooting skills to cover what
    the tool/machine doesnt tell you
  • Environmental issues eg recycling of tyres and
parts, waste disposal, regulations for exhaust
    and noise emissions, etc.
  • Occupational health and safety (OHS)
requirements relating to handling, storage of CNG
    and LNG
  • Sustainability and green work practices.

12
Automotive Industry - Conclusion
  • High-tech, challenging and dynamic.
  • One of the world's biggest industries.
