Aims of the DES
  • Choice
  • Ensure successful introduction of Choice
  • Give patients greater say in their healthcare
  • introduces the range of clinically appropriate
    choices available for relevant patients to choose
    from
  • improved access to hospitals and real choice
    about when and where their hospital appointment
    will be
  • Choose and Book
  • Drive up utilisation of Choose and Book system
  • Give patients more convenient hospital
    appointments and locations
  • provides GPs and patients with a fuller and more
    easily accessed range of information at the point
    of referral, including information about actual
    appointment dates and times
  • include less time spent chasing paper referrals
    and a reduction in the number of patients who do
    not turn up for appointments at hospital

Where are we today?
  • The building blocks are in place you have
    already come a long way
  • Total bookings have increased from 3,500 to
    100,000
  • 94 of GPs are registered to use the system
  • 100 of PCTs have commissioning rules in place
  • 94 of all providers and 100 of Acute Trusts
    have loaded their Directory of Services
  • Daily bookings have increased from around 150 a
    day to more than 2,000 per day

Timescales for delivery

  • Will be measured through a new, national, patient
    experience survey, of patients referred for a
    consultant outpatient appointment

Timescales for delivery
  • Dont leave it until the last minute
  • Early engagement across the health community,
    utilise the Cluster support team that is what
    they are there for
  • To receive the maximum available incentive on
    Choose and Book utilisation work to a practical
    lead in time 2 to 3 months dont leave the
    climb too steep
  • Recognise the importance of post go live support
    to GPs and practice staff

  • Component 1 gt60 of patients say yes to new
    surveys question on conversation about choice
    with GP full award
  • Component 2 national systems report to PCTs on
    CB usage awards on sliding scale 50 usage
    60 award 90 usage full award
