- The Gender-Issue is one of the most important
social and cultural discussed theme both in the
world in general and with growing attention also
in the Arabic/African world countries. - As is- and has been happening everywhere in the
domain of the Arts, a focus on gender-representati
ons in Arabic/African drama and theatre must deal
not only with the performance of women and men in
texts and on stage, reflecting or criticizing
their social roles in culture and society. - Also the position of women as female artists in
the mostly male-dominated domain of the theatre
organizations must be considered. Their voices
and their visions about the daily practices and
future changes must be heard and seen breaking
their silence. - Struggling against the social and ideological
power-constructions both male and female artists
are searching for a new freedom of body and mind
where image and self-image can come together. - The cultural geography of our present world is
leading to a pluralistic concept of identity,
reflected in terms like hyphenated identities
and hybrid constructs, touching different forms
of migration where nearly every-one, East/West or
North/South, has to take part in. - Old oppositions are continually shifting and
re-formulated, or disappearing as no longer
making sense.

subordination of femininity in the public space
(public squares such as Jemaa elfna,
al-halfawin, al-ataba, arrachid)The silence of
female artists in the theatre, writers and
directors to beIdentity and Image performing
subversive femininities and masculinities.The
actress and the boundaries of the visible
performing gender with/within the veil as
habitaSubversive female models of taming
masculinity as in Shahrazads tradition.Mixed
identities I pray in Arabic and dance in
Africa Abstracts are due before September
1, 2007 and should be submitted via e-mail to the
coordinators of the conference. Final papers are
due by October 30, 2007. Languages
English/Arabic.Those accepted will be hosted
