Language is at the core of ALL scholarship

• Without language there are no other subjects.
  This is easily
• demonstrated Without using any words, either
  vocally or
• in your head, perform the following task.
• Pick a subject.
• Think about that subject.
• Try to communicate that subject to another
  person.
• How did that work out for you?
• You see, every single thing you study is rooted
  in language
• both as a way of creating and acquiring meanings
  and as a
• way of communicating those meanings.

To study English language is to study

• Geography, History, Sociology, Psychology,
  Literature, Media, ICT.
• All of these directly impact on how language is
  used. Much of English Language study involves
  getting you to recognise and think about things
  that, on some level, you already knew to be true.
  It has a high oh, yeah! factor.

The difference between language and literature.

• It is a common misconception that literature is
  in some way superior or more academic than
  language.
• Actually, literature is a subset of language.
  Study literature and you will learn how to
  analyse literature study language and you will
  learn how to analyse any text you ever come into
  contact with, whether its War and Peace or a Bus
  ticket.
• Language might suit students who enjoy a more
  rigorous (almost scientific) analytical approach
  to the world.

• Studying English language is about seeking for
  explanations. It is as academically challenging
  and rigorous as any other subject. It suits those
  who are inquisitive and helps to develop strong
  analytical skills. Ultimately, it isnt the kind
  of subject that you leave in the classroom it
  will actually change how you see the world.
