Technology is cool and helps us learn!
These pictures document the first time my grade
6 class had the opportunity to use SMART
technology to complete a quiz. During my
practicum at McMurrich PJ, I noticed that a
number of my students became far more engaged in
lessons that presented opportunities to use
technology. Sometimes allowing a student to do
research or a writing assignment using a computer
would be the key to Participation. Given the
opportunity to educate myself on the use of SMART
tools such as Santeo allowed me to integrate some
excitement as oppose to anxiety in writing a
quiz. This experience demonstrated my
commitment to Professional Practice as I took
initiative to Learn a new technology in order to
elevate student learning. I planned a lunch n
learn for the other teachers in the school so
they may to learn how to use these tools
effectively.
3
Students created a video to show how they
have used technology as an educational tool in
subjects areas such as social science. With the
assistance of teachers, students entered a
competition to win SMART technology for their
school. Click above to view the video. I
assisted teachers and students brainstorm content
ideas for the video and assisted in some
technical aspects.

This is a student work sample of green homes
which were designed according to various
assignment criteria for the grade 6 electricity
unit. To prepare students for their final
assignment I wanted to provide them with most
relevant and current research. My knowledge
alone would not be sufficient as sustainability
is not the strongest area of my expertise. I
decided to do some rigorous research and get in
touch with an expert in this field. Elena from
Bullfrog Energy (Ontarios only green energy
provider) was invited to come and speak to my
students regarding green energy, current
environmental issues and sustainable living. I
feel that outreaching outside the school for
expert assistance demonstrates my dedication to
ongoing professional learning. I further
visited various local environmental organizations
such as TREC and attended an exhibit on
sustainability Design for the other 90 OCAD

brochures!
The above photo was taken during a group period
in a grade 6 science class. The class was
re-arranged into three different research areas
1. Online Research Area 2. Print Resource
Centre 3. Materials/Project Construction Area My
classroom had students at various learning levels
with different strengths and weaknesses. In an
effort to create a supportive, collaborative and
encouraging environment for group work, I allowed
students to choose the different stations they
would like to work at. Each member of the group
chose a role in which to contribute towards their
assigned project. This example supports my
leadership in learning communities. In
recognizing the variant learning styles and
needs of my students I made accommodations to
the regular classroom environment to support
success for all my students.

Commitment to Students and Student
Learning Members are dedicated in their care and
commitment to students. They treat students
equitably and with respect and are sensitive to
factors that influence individual student
learning. Members facilitate the development of
students as contributing citizens of Canadian
society.
The above photograph was taken upon the
completion of a grade 6 poetry unit. Students
wrote A series of poems which they later turned
to beautiful pieces of artwork. Each student
made an Individual hanging poetry mobile or
poetry book accompanied with illustrations and
decorations. My commitment to students and
student learning was reflected in working with
the needs several identified LD and ESL
students. I made special accommodations and
spent after class time In order to ensure all
students have a final work of poetry to be proud
of!

Teaching across curriculum through drama
These titles are some of the workshops which I
have attended to keep current in my
professional Knowledge. I plan to utilize some
of the knowledge I learned into my teaching
practice. Currently I am developing a lesson
based on a drama workshop I attended with Deborah
Sewell. In my current grade 8 practicum I will
be integrating Social Studies and Drama in our
unit on Migration. Students will explore how
their fellow classmates may have arrived to
Canada. In the Drama Part of our lessons,
students will act our a chosen story of
migration. Group discussions and critiques will
follow. Attending professional workshops and
conferences allow me to grow as a dynamic,
knowledgeable and creative educator.
