Title: DHT Workshop:
1DHT Workshop Defining New Goals, Techniques,
and Development/Support Mechanisms for Downhole
Tools in the Integrated Ocean Drilling
Program (Flemings, Murray, Fisher)
2- Downhole Tools ODP/DSDP
- ODP/DSDP - notable DHT achievements in broad
range of environments - The road to success rough in some cases
- Should DHT operation and development within IODP
be fundamentally different from that practiced
during DSDP and ODP?
3- MOTIVATION
- New Program, New Platforms, New Funding
Structure, New Management Structure - Window of Opportunity to strengthen role of
Downhole Tools in Ocean Drilling - Science-Engineering interface is under-exploited
potential for big science reward
4- MOTIVATION IODP is different
- Simultaneous use of riser, riserless, and
mission-specific platforms - Exploration of environments/problems that
couldnt addressed during DSDP and ODP. - Influences planning, funding, at-sea operations,
and technical development.
5- IODP is Different
- 3 Partners Japan, U.S., Europe
- 3 Platforms (MSP, Riser, Riserless)
- Central Management Office-IMI
6- New/better DHTs critical to IODP success
- DHTs are essential for addressing the three
primary IODP research themes - Support of engineering development of new
measurement and sampling tools is one of the
three guiding principles for the implementation
of the IODP. -
7- Key Workshop Goals
- What downhole measurements and sampling are
essential to address fundamental goals described
in the ISP to the IODP? - What capabilities currently exist for use on the
various IODP platforms, and what technologies are
needed for future success? - How can IODP and the various scientific and
technical partners nurture development of new
tools, and facilitate the transfer of technology
from the development stage to become part of
standard operations?
8- Workshop Focus Downhole Tools
- Autonomous DHTs are self-contained instruments
that make in-situ measurements or collect samples
over short depth intervals, in single sample or
"burst" sampling mode. - Excludes wireline/LWD logging
- Allows focus on DHTs, -- no primary IODP
contractor. - Excludes long term CORK monitoring
- Topical restriction focuses discussion to
address pressing issues
