Jewish Beliefs on Death

• Life is a gift from God.
• There is no death without sin.
• Euthanasia is forbidden.

When a Jewish Person Dies

• The body is covered with a sheet .
• A lighted candle is placed near the head.
• A close family member will make a symbolic tear
  in their clothes.

Before the Funeral

• A group of volunteers will wash and prepare the
  body.
• The dead person is then dressed in a simple white
  shroud

• Jewish tradition teaches that everyone should be
  equal in death.
• The dead person is then placed in a plain coffin.

The Funeral Service

• The funeral service involves four elements
• A short procession to the cemetery
• The burial
• A short eulogy
• Recitation of the Kaddish prayer

During the Procession

• The coffin is carried round the local area.
• Psalm 91 is recited.

During the Burial Service

• All males present must share the task of filling
  in the grave.
• A short address is said which celebrates the
  merits of the dead person.
• The Kaddish prayer is recited.

After the Funeral

• The family spend 7 days at home mourning.
• During the 7 days, friends and family bring food
  so the family are not troubled by making food.
• The Kaddish is recited 3 times a day.
• Over the next month the family go back to their
  normal lives.
