Astronomy and Physics Colloquium
"Block the Shock with Lightning Protection"
Abstract Lightning strikes the earth 50 to 100
times every second. This adds up to 8 million or
9 million strikes everyday. When one of these
strikes hit a populated area, it can cause
problems with the electrical systems that people
depend on. Over the summer, Melissa interned at
PolyPhaser Corporation in Minden, Nevada.
PolyPhaser manufactures lightning and surge
protection products. Different methods and
products of protection are used to ensure that
electrical systems arent damaged. Diversion,
shielding and surge protection are some of the
methods that will be discussed.
