Conflict
  • Conflict in literature is defined as the
    struggle between two forces.
  • If there is no conflict, there is no story!

4
Conflicts
  • There are five major types of conflict in
    literature
  • Human v. Human
  • Human v. Nature
  • Human v. Society
  • Human v. Technology/Machine
  • Human v. Self

5
Human v. Human
  • Human v. Human conflict is when there are two
characters in direct conflict with each other.

6
Human v. Nature
  • Human v. Nature conflict is when a character
is in conflict with a force beyond their control.
  • This force can be nature itself, for example
    a storm.
  • The conflict can also be a force of nature
    such as death or fate.

7
Human v. Society
  • Human v. Society conflict occurs when the
characters ideas or actions clash or disagree
with the rules of society that all other people
    follow.

8
Human v. Technology/Machine
  • Human v. Technology/Machine occurs when a
character is pitted against robotic forces with
    artificial intelligence.

9
Human v. Self
  • Human v. Self conflict occurs when the
character is struggling with something within
their mind or conscience. It might be a decision
    he or she
  • has to make, or it might
  • be him or her struggling
  • with the consequences
  • of their actions.

Skit Activity
  • You will all be participating in an activity to
see how well you understand the different types
of conflict. Here are the rules
  • 1. Everyone in the group must participate-even a
    tiny bit!.
  • 2. You must act out what is on your slip of
paper. NO giving the audience any clues!
  • 3. When the skit is over, you must write down
what your guess is. Dont discuss it with your
neighbor. Some conflict types may be used more
    than once!
