IUPAC Names of Alkanes
  • Find longest carbon chain. Base name is same as
    n-alkane of that length.
  • Do not forget about rule number 1!
  • Compare to the parent n-alkane. Wherever H has
been replaced what is replacing it is considered
a substituent and named as a prefix to the base
    name
  • Organic subtituents alkyl groups (symbol is R)
  • Use a number in front of the substituent prefix
to indicate which carbon of the chain it is
attached to. (If necessary) Number the chain from
the end closer to the substituent. (Separate
    numbers from words with hyphens)
  • Rules for multiple substituents
  • Different substituents list in alphabetical order
  • Same substituents indicate number of with prefix
    di, tri, tetra, penta, etc.
  • Each substituent gets a number.
  • Number the chain from the end closer to the
    nearest substituent.
