General Situation of the Children Who work in
Streets are
  • According to some studies, the characteristics
    of the children at risk around the world are
    stated as
  • 1 billion children are living in abject poverty.
  • 300 million children are homeless.
  • 140 million children are not going to primary
    school.
  • 7 million children are refugees.
  • Between the ages of 5-14, 270 million children
    are working, 150 million of them are working
    under unhealthy conditions and doing very heavy
    work.

Our Purpose
  • The aim of our project is to help our friends who
    work in streets so that they will be able to go
    to schools.

  • The numbers in Turkey are like
  • 9 million 300 thousand children are living in
    abject poverty.
  • 700 thousand children are in need of help.
  • Between the ages of 7-18, 8 million 120 thousand
    children are not going to school.
  • At average, everyday 107 children are losing
    their lives.

  • 72 of them are parents,
  • 22 of them are exposed to violence.
  • According to our research, there are 6000
    children who are living in the streets.

According to the data of one research
  • The responses of the children to the question
    What was the worst thing happened to you in the
    street?
  • 40 of them replied as beating,
  • 24 of them replied as mistreatment of the
    police,
  • 20 of them replied as sexual harassment,
  • 12 of them replied as being knifed,
  • 28 of them replied as nothing has happened.

  • Children living in the streets earn money by
  • 74 of them by begging,
  • 20 of them by stealing,
  • 2 of them by doing temporary works,
  • 4 of them by selling naphta.

When we analyzed our own city, Van
  • According to the official data, the number of the
    children who are working in the streets is over
    900,
  • According to the International Labor
    Organizations findings, there are 336 children
    in Van who are working under heavy conditions.
  • Children who are working in the streets are much
    more vulnerable for catching a disease..

According to the interviews we have done with the
institutions in Van
  • Interview with the Society for the Protection of
    Children
  • Society for the Protection of Children is
    assisting the handicapped people,
  • They also supply aid for poor people and elderly
    people.

  • If a childs human rights are abused
  • First the family is tried to be convinced,
  • In case failed, then they help via court
    decision.
  • Children who do not have families are looked
    after in nursing homes and they make sure they go
    to schools.

Interview with the Center for Children and
Youth
  • We interviewed Child Development Expert Suna
    TATAR,
  • They are working on childrens education,
  • They assist and supply help for the children who
    have problems,
  • They direct older children to study in
    open-university.

  • They are in contact with other institutions and
    they are suppported by them.
  • The registered number of the children are
    changing constantly,
  • They fund successful students to take additional
    courses,
  • They encourage students to attend competitions
    who are talented in painting, literature and
    poetry,
  • They do not discriminate in between children and
    they approach with love and affection.

We made a questionnaire with the children working
in the streets in Van city center
  • The average of the childrens age is 12,
  • They are 6 children in one house in average,
  • They earn approximately 6.8 Ytl for a day,
  • 12 of the childrens mothers and 6 of their
    fathers are not living,
  • Close relatives look after the children who do
    not have parents,

  • The percentage of going to school is 100 in 16
    children,
  • The percentage of the children who do not go to
    school but who are willing to go to school is
    100,
  • The percentage of brothers/sisters going to
    school at the same time is 88,
  • The percentage of the families who allow their
    children to go to school is 92,
  • The percentage of the children who are covering
    the family income is 23.5,
  • The jobs they would like to do are being a
    doctor, teacher, and police.
  • The children give the money directly to their
    families.

Our target group in line with our Project is
  • In conclusion,
  • The children who have lost their fathers in
    accidents and who are abandoned by their mothers
  • We searched Gurbet, Azat, and Esra GEZER
    siblings conditions and found out that their
    grandmother looks after them and tries to send
    them to school.

  • We initiated helping these friends with our
    Children Hand in Hand Project.
  • We informed the condition of Gezer siblings to
    the Social Solidarity Association.
  • They supplied clothing, food and financial aid
    for them.
  • We contacted the Governorship and requested
    scholarship for these three children.

  • We would like to thank many times to Dr. Hayal
    Köksal for her support, and to Microsoft and
    Quality Peace Education Center for their being
    helpful for us learning how to use their tools.
