Food Webs
  • Mr. Taylor
  • 7th grade Science class
  • Lesson on food webs

2
The Food Web
  • The food web is a network of feeding
relationships within an ecosystem or community
  • The predator-prey relationship
  • All starts with plants, which are the producers

3
This is a food web of a pond
  • Notice that the watercrest and cattails are the
producers and directly affect the feeding habits
of all the consumers above them.

4
What is a producer?
  • Producers are plants
  • Plants are autotrophic, which means that they
use the process of photosynthesis to make glucose
  • Glucose is food for plants

5
What is a consumer?
  • The raccoon is a diverse consumer that will eat
fish, crayfish, mice, snakes, birds, eggs,
    insects, and even honey.
  • So we can define consumers as herbivores,
    carnivores, and omnivores
  • The raccoon is an omnivore

6
The links between the producers and the consumers
  • watercress --- suckers --- trout --- raccoon
  • cattails ---- suckers ---- muskrat
  • cattails ---- crayfish ---- raccoon
  • Certain animals will eat certain things and this
shows the connection between the producers and
    consumers

7
There are far more producers then consumers
8
Herbivores
  • These are animals that only eat plants
  • The E. Cottontail rabbit loves to eat grasses and
    clover

9
Carnivores
  • These are animals that feed on other animals.
  • Meat lovers
  • This is the bobcat and it is a fierce predator of
    the rabbit

10
Omnivores
  • These animals will eat both plants and animals.
  • This is a coyote
  • It will eat berries and anything from mice to
    deer.

11
Antarctic Ocean Food Web
  • This food web shows the complexity and diversity
of an environment. The ocean is the largest and
most dynamic of all communities, and as you can
see has a very complex web.
