Local Vision for Maternity services
  • The vision for maternity services in Brighton
and Hove is to achieve a world class maternity
service and to ensure that the service is woman
    centred and needs led.
  • Maternity services in Brighton and Hove will
promote choice, access and continuity of care. It
will ensure direct and early access to midwifery
services and at the heart of the service, safety
and innovation are the main drivers for improved
    quality within the service .

5
Local Demographic profile
  • Brighton and Hove has a relatively high
proportion of 20-44 year olds compared to England
as a whole, making it a relatively young city
  • It also has relatively high levels of
deprivation, concentrated in the East of the
city, and an unemployment rate that is higher
than both the regional and national average.
  • It has more lone parent households with dependent
children, more lone parents out of work and more
children living in households where all adults
are out of work, than in the South East or
    England as a whole.
  • The general fertility rate in Brighton and Hove
is lower than that of England and Wales but
follows a similar upward trend. The age specific
rates are lower in the younger age groups and
higher in the older age groups (particularly the
35-39 year old band) than in the South East and
    nationally.
  • Rates of caesarean sections are high compared to
national averages and spend on maternity services
is low on average while outcomes are good

Initiatives for Maternity services 2009
  • Initiative 1 We will ensure that pre-conception
and pre-natal education is available to maximize
healthy foetal development and normal childbirth
  • By 2011 90 of pregnant women will see a midwife
within 12 weeks to discuss their individual needs
and preferences about how and where to give
birth. We will focus in particular on making
contact with women from vulnerable groups
  • Initiative 2 By 2010 every woman will be able to
make an informed choice about place of birth in
the knowledge that the NHS will be able to meet
her preference for a home birth, birth in midwife
led unit or birth in a consultant led unit
  • Initiative 3 By 2010 all women will be
individually supported by a midwife throughout
their labour and birth following confirmation of
    confirmed labour.

Initiatives for Maternity services 2009
  • Initiative 4 By 2011 all pregnant women and new
mothers will be able to get the help they need
    with mental health problems.
  • Initiative 5 We will aim to reduce elective
caesarian sections by education and improved
    midwifery support, promoting normal birth.
  • Initiative 6 We will maximize the initiation of
breastfeeding to enable prevalence targets to be
    achieved (refer to Childrens PTP).
