What is communication?

• Process of sending information to one person to
  another (humans) or from a person to a machine
  or machine to a person through some sort of media
  and language (code).

• One way transmission of information from the
  producer to the receiver

• Tools that allow for equal communication
  opportunities among all participants. (Bates and
  Poole 2003, p. 54)
• Synchronous
• Participation occurs in real-time
• Asynchronous
• Participation with time-delay

What can be some of the barriers to communication?

• Not understanding the language
• Cultural difference
• Distraction (noise)
• Emotions
• Attitude
• Prior knowledge
• Beliefs (political, religious etc)
• Physical (hunger!!)
• Lack of technology
• Distance, time zones etc
