3
Problem Statement
  • The goal of this project is to adapt a MTS 858
Bionix servohydraulic testing machine to indent
mouse bone to determine the mechanical strength
    of bones.

Product Design Specification
  • Process to provide homogeneous surface for
    indentation.
  • Stabilizer
  • Attach to 5000 lb. Load cell with eight screws of
    3/8 fine thread, R2.375.
  • Nanoindenter
  • D0.01 mm
  • Provide small indentation depth of 2-3 microns
    under load from 0-1 N.
  • MTS Attachment
  • Attachment for Nanoindenter to Load Cell

7
Design Alternatives
  • Process for Smoothing
  • Stabilizer
  • Piece Model
  • Nanoindentor tip
  • Square Pyramid
  • Nanoindenter Attachment
  • Double Jointed

8
Smoothing Process
  • Fix bone in Petri dish with epoxy.
  • Stabilize Petri dish in epoxy.
  • Saw bone with microscopy saw.
  • Polish bone with serial diamond cloths of
increasing fineness placed over the saw blade.
