What is Testing of Emissions?
Read the pages, and pay attention to the words in

• The Illinois vehicle emissions test checks if the
  emission control system on your car is OK. The
  test are designed to lessen pollution. It is
  required by Illinois law to have your car tested.
  You will receive a notice in the mail!! This is
  notice is for your car only. You will not be
  asked to show residence.

• Cars are tested every two years to prevent
  pollution. If necessary, your vehicle may need
  repairs.

When and Where to Test Your Car

• The vehicle is usually tested every two years
  after the new car is four years old. If your car
  or truck is scheduled for testing, you will
  receive a notice in the mail. The times and maps
  to testing places will be on the notice.

Oh my, the car did not pass!!

• If your vehicle does not pass the emissions test,
  have the car fixed and then retested. After
  fixing (repairing) your car, bring your car again
  to the testing center. Bring your repair
  receipts.

Reasons for the car not passing the Emissions

• It was brought to the station before it is
  scheduled to be tested.
• It was tested three times and failed and has not
  be approved for additional test.
• The Repair Data Section on the back of the
  Vehicle Inspection Report has not been completed.
• The vehicle cannot maintain and idle between 350
  rpm and 1200 rpm for an idle test.
• The technician cannot get a good sample of the
  exhaust.
• The tailpipe is missing or damaged.
• The condition of the vehicle contains safety
  concerns.
• The car may have previous damage.
• The testing centers computer system is not
  working.
• You did not bring the test notice to the station.
