WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?
  • Plagiarism is when you use another persons
words, expressions or ideas, but you do not
    acknowledge the source.

3
RESEARCH PAPER
  • A research paper is not expected to be filled
with your own original ideas, but rather you are
seeking out what others have said about the
    topic.
  • This means that most of the information in your
paper will need to be documented.

4
Plagiarism occurs when.
  • Plagiarism usually occurs during the note-taking
stage, when it seems easier to copy the exact
words without indicating that youre quoting
    directly.

5
GOOD SCHOLARSHIP
  • Careful documentation can be tedious and time
    consuming.
  • However, this work is ESSENTIAL to good
    scholarship.

6
CITATIONS
  • Forms of citation help you to draw a clear line
between your work and the work of others.
  • Citations allows others (including your teacher!)
    to verify your work.

7
AVOIDING PLAGIARISM
  • Always put the source on your note-card as you
    record information.
  • Always name/cite your source in the body of your
    paper.

8
AVOIDING PLAGIARISM
  • Enclose quotation marks around all material that
    is directly quoted.
  • Cite the information source.

9
AVOIDING PLAGIARISM
  • Paraphrase (restate) material by writing it in
    your own words and style.
  • Cite the information source.

10
AVOIDING PLAGIARISM
  • Acknowledge borrowed material with an
    introduction.
  • For direct quotations, always use quotation marks
    around the copied material.

11
EXAMPLES
  • EXAMPLE 1
  • According to Hansen (1998, p. 12) ...
  • EXAMPLE 2
  • Johnson (1999, p. 68) argues that
  • EXAMPLE 3
  • Smith (1999, p. 68) points out

12
WHEN DONT YOU CITE?
  • You DONT need to cite a source when the
    information is widely known.
  • It is suggested that the information should be
available in at least THREE resources.

13
THIS INCLUDES.
  • Information found in dictionaries
  • Mathematical facts
  • Scientific facts
  • Statistics and information that can easily be
find in several sources, and are not likely to
    vary from source to source

14
CITE A SOURCE WHEN...
  • you restate an idea, opinion or thesis by an
    author,
  • if you restate an experts theory or opinion,
  • if you use facts that are not common knowledge,
    or
  • if you need to provide an informational or
    explanatory note.

15
REMEMBER!
  • If you quote an author - even if you are only
borrowing a single key word - you need to tell
your reader the origin of the quotation!

Mark Twain said
Adam was the only man who, when he said a good
thing, knew that nobody had said it before him.
