France
The Flag Of France!
  • On May 20 1794 the flag on France was adopted. It
has three horizontal stripes, blue, red, and
white. The colors on the flag represents the
French revolution, blue represents care, white
symbolize the virgin Mary, and red represents St.
    Denis the patron Saint Paris.

Holidays
  • The French celebrate several holidays each year.
For New Years (Jour de Ian) they often present
flowers to older family members and some exchange
gifts. Also in February, Mardi Gras (Shorve
Tuesday) is celebrated with parades, costumes,
    and parties.

4
Dating
  • Young people start dating at age 15. Many choose
to live together before or instead of marriage.

5
How they eat
  • Etiquette is important to the French. Both hands
remain above the table at all times! A man may
rest his wrists, but a woman her wrists must be
    on the tables edge.

Jean-Paul Sartre the novelists
  • Sartre wrote novels, plays, and essays that
    expounded his philosophical and political
theories. He is probably best known for his
writings on existentialism, a philosophy that
embraces individual human freedom and social
    responsibility in an incomprehensible universe.
Sartre also had a great deal of interest in
Marxism, which often influenced his works. Sartre
was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in
1964, but he refused it, saying he didnt want to
    become institutionalized by official honors.

Zinedine Zidance the soccer player
  • The son ofAlgerian immigrants to France, Zidane
learned to play soccer in the streets of
Marseilles. When he was 14, he was spotted by a
talent scout and started on the path to sports
stardom. He has since led the French national
team to a World Cup championship in 1998,
followed by the European championship in 2000.
When the soccer powerhouse team Real Madrid
decided to acquire him in 2001, they paid a
record 64.5 million. In 2005 he announced his
    intentions to retire in 2007.

History
  • By 51 B.C., the Romans had conquered the area's
Celtic inhabitants, the Gauls, who then adopted
the Romans' customs, language, and laws. Clovis
I, king of the Franks, defeated the last Roman
governor in A.D. 486. The French consider his
conversion to Catholicism in 496 the founding act
of the nation the move won him the support of
the Catholic Church and Gallo-Roman people, who
helped him defeat surrounding Arian kingdoms. In
the late eighth century, France was part of
    Charlemagne's vast empire.

Personal Appearance
  • In general the French take great care to dress
well weather they are wearing formal of casual
attire and they feel more at ease with visitors
who show the same degree of attention to
appearance. Paris is home to many of the world's
    leading fashion designers. Professional attire,
depending on the business and location, tends to
be formal. Parisians dress more formally than
people in other cities. In the southern sunbelt,
dress is more casual but not less stylish.
