Title: 4'4 PartialQuotients Algorithm Strategies

1
4.4 Partial-Quotients Algorithm Strategies
Made by Kari Kracht to follow the Everyday
Mathematics Lesson
2
Math Message
  • Write a 3-digit number that is divisible by 6.
  • When you finish, make sure that you have finished
    math journal page 105.
  • Follow-Up
  • What did you come up with?
  • How did you know your number was divisible by 6?

3
Mental Math and Reflexes
  • Write the answer with a whole-number remainder or
    a fraction remainder.

4
What are we working on?
  • 1. Know and use multiplication facts, related
    division facts, and extended facts.
  • 2. Divide using a friendly number strategy with
    the partial-quotients algorithm.
  • 3. Divide using an at leastnot more than
    strategy with the partial-quotients algorithm.

5
GAME TIME Divisibility Dash
  • SRB page 302
  • Materials
  • Number cards 0-9
  • Number cards 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, and 10 (2 of each)
  • Object
  • To discard ALL cards

6
Divisibility Dash SRB page 302
  • Directions
  • 1. Shuffle the divisor cards (2, 3, 5, 6, 9, and
    10) and place them face down on the table.
  • 2. Deal 8 draw cards (0-9) to each player place
the left-over cards in a pile next to the divisor
    cards.
  • 3. For each round, flip over the top divisor
    card.
  • On your turn, use the cards in your hand to make
2-digit numbers that are multiples of the divisor
card. Make as many as you can. (You can not use
    a card twice.)
  • Place all the cards you used in a discard pile
  • If you cant make a 2-digit number that is a
multiple of the divisor card, you must take a
    card from the draw pile.

  • Directions continued
  • 4. If a player disagrees that a 2-digit number
is a multiple of the divisor card, that player
may challenge. Any numbers that are not
multiples of the divisor card must be returned to
    the players hand.
  • 5. If the draw pile or divisor cards have all
been used, they can be reshuffled and put back
    into play.
  • 6. The first player to discard all of his/her
    cards wins.

8
Reviewing Partial-Quotients
  • Refer to SRB page 22 for help!
  • Use a series of at leastnot more than multiples
    of the divisor.
  • Start with easy numbers, such as 100 times the
divisor or 10 times the divisor.

9
Lets do an Example
  • 6 1,010
  • Are there at least 100 6s in 1,010?
  • YES, 100 6 600
  • Are there at least 200 6s in 1,010?
  • NO, 200 6 1,200
  • SO, there are AT LEAST 100 6s in 1,010 but NOT
    MORE THAN 200 6s in 1,010.

10
Finishing the Example
  • 6 1,010

11
Practice
  • Ill draw cards for the dividend and divisor.
  • With your partner, use partial-quotients to solve
    the problem.
  • How did you solve the problem? What numbers did
    you use?

12
HOMEWORK
  • Study-Link 4-4 Division

13
Prime Time Task Day 2
  • Finish Math Boxes on journal page 105
  • DONT FORGET TO TURN IN YOUR HOMEWORK!
